From Publishers Weekly
Despite aslow beginning, Richards (Sunset Bridge) manages to bring readers a well-crafted tale of atonement before death. Utterly alone after years of mistakes ("Knowing what was best for everybody was something I was good at"), Charlotte Hale is diagnosed with leukemia. Facing her mortality, she sets out to redress those mistakes and mend the rift with her daughter, Taylor, a rift that has prevented Charlotte from meeting her granddaughter. Charlotte, who has long craved "power, control, status," begins humbly trying to make amends with small acts of kindness, hoping to achieve her main goal while she still has time. Charlotte is an admirable character, using her newfound powers of self-observation to bring meaning back into her life. Richards creates a heart-wrenching atmosphere that slowly builds to the final pages, and continues to echo after the book is finished. Agent: Steve Axelrod, the Steve Axelrod Agency.

A very emotional, compassionate, and uplifting tale of women dedicated to helping each other.
By Dave Parker
One Mountain Away is a deeply emotional story. Charlotte Hale is trying to repair and rebuild relationships with those close to her as she confronts her imminent death from leukemia. Charlotte started journaling the important parts of her life on the advice of a therapist at Duke as a way to sort out her life. These journals open many of the chapters of the story, providing background. The main story covers the last three months of her life, introducing important new friends and finding forgiveness from those she has wronged.
Charlotte grew up in the poorest family in a poor North Carolina mountain area near Asheville. She was determined to be successful after suffering the scorn of her classmates for her and her drunken father. That determination stood her well. She learned to be sophisticated, strong, and manipulative, both as CEO of her company and as a wife and mother. Her family was destroyed by misinterpretation of her remarks about her 17 year old daughter Taylor’s premature baby girl. Taylor immediately cut Charlotte out of her and her daughter Maddie’s lives; Charlotte’s husband Ethan sided with Taylor – and left.
The main story begins 10 years later. Taylor has not spoken to or about her mother since Maddie’s birth. Maddie is epileptic, and an accident in the park becomes the catalyst for beginning to bring Charlotte and Taylor together – with a lot of help from friends Charlotte never knew she had.
There are a number of well-developed secondary characters, mostly women with bad experiences in their past; each has a story of her own. Together, they help Charlotte in her goal to make amends for her past mistakes. These characters meld into helpful, compassionate friends and relatives ready to continue to help women in painful circumstances; they call themselves Goddesses Anonymous.

Oh great! ANOTHER five star review!
By Amazon Customer
Okay, I realize I'm just repeating the same praise that others have heaped on this book, but I have to write this review. I only wish I could write a review that was as good as this book is written.
Now I'm a guy who usually would not pick up a book with a cover of a woman walking through a field of wildflowers. One look at this book, and I assumed it was probably a romance (with heaving bosoms and turgid man muscles), but I knew better from other books written by this fine author, so I gave it a chance. Boy, am I glad I did!
As I read, I keep finding myself asking, "How does she come up with this stuff?" It's all so unusual and so, well, HONEST. These people are written so well, that by the end of the book the reader will feel like you know them. I suffered with them because of their mistakes, and got frustrated by the grudges they held onto for dear life.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I appreciate the view of the inner workings of these characters. Yes, they do unreasonable things, but not without reasons that make sense in their own heads.
Is this a romance novel? Well, sort of. It deals with a number of different relationships--most of them failing. But it is NOT a light, mindless, fall-into-bed teenage love story. It is a well-crafted, thought provoking, and realistic novel about what people do to each other in relationships.
So, in short, I loved this book, and I loved where it took me.

I cared about the characters
By Maddy
i liked this book very much. It's an easy summer read. We are really able to see how the apple doesn't fall far from the tree - each generation repeats the behavior of the one before and doesn't see it. I only gave this book four stars because towards the end I felt it got sappy and predictable. I cared about the characters and especially like Ethan when he starts being honest about his thoughts to both Charlotte and Taylor.
