About the Author
Lorraine C. Zentz has been a pharmacy technician since 1981. She lives in the small mountain town of Mesa, Colorado, and has worked in all pharmacy arenas (retail, home health, hospital, oncology, and training/education) during her pharmacy career. Lorraine received her Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry, and her Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction (the design and implementation of educational materials). She also completed her doctorate studies in adult education. She has held the position of Colorado State Coordinator for NPTA and Chairman of the Colorado Pharmacist Society Technician Academy and has been certified since 1985. In 2004, she was the recipient of the "Outstanding Leadership Award" and also named "Technician of the Year" for the state of Colorado. Lorraine conducts continuing education programs for technicians throughout Colorado and nationally at the annual NPTA convention.

Why it's 3 stars

The book takes on more of an essay form, which can leave reading it bland and a bit boring. As I continue to read the pharmacology of the drugs, I find myself looking up, and finding more important information, on the internet than what this book provides. The information given about each drug is disorganized and head scratching in structure, with each drug receiving its own tidbits of information that doesn't help connect it with other drugs of the same class, as if a new person was assigned to write about, and isolate, each drug in that class.

This review would have been 2 stars if I purchased it, but I rented it.

Reading this is a chore. Definitions are vague and unit designations change without any explanation (using the measurement symbol t for teaspoon when everywhere else in the chapter it's written as tsp.) and in some cases the math is just flat out wrong (writing out that 1/2 a cent would be written as $0.001 instead of what it should be $0.005. Which wouldn't be so bad except the author talks about writing math texts as well in the preface...). If you have a computer sitting in front of you so that you might double check things that are unclear, then it's an acceptable purchase, otherwise I'd pass it up.

This book was helpful... a little wordy with unnecessary coverage of things not on the test. there were a few typos and there were topics missing such as pharmacy literature aka the red book, the orange book,etc.. Nothing at all and there are questions on the quiz pertaining to them. also the laws werent covered enough. even the 2005 psuedoephedrine law isnt mentioned and the book was supposedly updated on the quiz. Once again. a question on the test. all and all it helped me pass. but its 38 chapters so start about a month before your exam.

How to express your values more eloquently and act upon them more effectively

As I began to read this brilliant book, I was reminded of James O'Toole's contribution to a book he co-authored with Warren Bennis and Daniel Goleman, Transparency: How Leaders Create a Culture of Candor, when O'Toole discusses "speaking to power." He briefly examines several plays (Sophocles' Antigone, John Osborne's Luther, and Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons) whose protagonist offers a reminder to leaders in our own time of the responsibility to create a transparent "culture of candor." O'Toole also examples of organizations that do -- or do not -- have such a culture, those whose leaders are - or are not -- "constantly willing to rethink their most basic assumptions through a process of constructive dissent...about such often-taboo subjects as the nature of working conditions they offer employees, the purposes of their corporation, and their responsibilities to various stakeholders." Whatever the size and nature of an organization may be, O'Toole insists, it must be one "one in which every employee is empowered to speak the truth." Trust must be the essential ingredient to its effectiveness [and is] the most elusive and fragile aspect of leadership" because it is so difficult to earn but so easy to lose and, once lost, nearly impossible to regain.

I hope Gentile will forgive me for beginning this review as I have. She and O'Toole are kindred spirits. Both stress the importance of focusing on an awareness of ethical issues and then determining with meticulous care what would be the right thing to do in a moral crisis. However, well-aware of the perils of the "Knowing-Doing Gap," she and O'Toole also stress the importance of taking appropriate action in a timely manner, driven by values to be sure but also guided and informed by scripts, rehearsals, and other preparations that will achieve the desired results. It is Gentile's stated purpose to help her reader develop the skills and confidence as well as "the moral muscle" to express and affirm their values. She proceeds on the assumption that "most of us will encounter values in conflict with the expectations of our clients, our peers, our bosses, or our organizations. That is why this skill and practice-based approach is essential."

Here in Dallas near the downtown area, we have a Famers Market at which some of the merchants offer sample slices of fresh fruit. In that same spirit, here are three brief excerpts from Gentile's lively and eloquent narrative that suggest the thrust and flavor of her insights:

"Recognizing the fact that we are all capable of speaking and acting on our values, as well as the fact that we have not always done so, is both empowering and enlightening...It opens a oath to self-knowledge, as well as situational analysis, that we may otherwise shirt-circuit." (Page 49)

"One of the most powerful enablers we have identified has been the ability to reframe a position: an opportunity with less than ethical attributes is reframed as a risk we all want to avoid; a disagreement that appears to throw the ethics of our audience into doubt is reframed as a `learning dialogue' wherein we are trying to uncover the true parameters of a possible decision; a win-lose choice is reframed through the use of argument and research as a win-win situation; seemingly self-evident assumptions or `truisms' are reframed as debatable or even patently false." (Page 67)

One of the most promising levers for enabling us to voice our values "appears to be generating a self-story that allows us to find ways to align what we think is right with who we already think we are. The point here is that how we incorporate values conflicts into our self-story can serve to enable, or disable, our ability to act on our values. It can allow us to play to our strengths, or not. Creating this story is not just about self-knowledge; it is about the way we choose to use that self-knowledge...[especially in light of research] suggesting that most of us are susceptible to self-justifying biases or finding ways to view our decisions as positively motivated, even when we would be critical of someone else who made the same choices." (Page 115)

Gentile frames her narrative within a structure of several assumptions about her reader. For example, that her reader wants to voice and act on her or his values; has already done so in the past, with mixed results; can do so more often and more effectively than before; has found it easier to voice her or his values in some contexts or situations than in others; is more likely to increase frequency and effectiveness of voicing and acting upon values after focused and rigorous practice; and can offer "a powerful example" to others to voice and act on their own values more often and more effectively. Readers will greatly appreciate the fact that, before concluding her book, Gentile provides various resources (including some self-diagnostic exercises) that will help them to review key points, identify and then evaluate their options, and then formulate an appropriate action plan. She includes a "To-Do" list on Pages 244-245.

For some people, hopefully for many people, this will be the most important book they ever read IF they absorb and digest the wealth of information and counsel with meticulous care. I urge them to highlight or underline key passages and review them frequently... and re-read the entire book again in 2-3 months. It will reward their attention generously. More to the point, it will strengthen the skills they need to think more clearly and to assert themselves more effectively. Mary Gentile does more, so much more than encourage principled people to speak up and take action when they know what's right and what must be done. She also prepares them to speak with greater eloquence and to increase the impact of any actions their conscience compels them to initiate.

Excellent, actionable ideas for being true to yourself

Mary Gentile has written a very interesting and practical guide that helps people act on their convictions in a range of situations. Written mostly with business applications in mind, the suggestions offered by Gentile are equally applicable in other arenas, such as interactions among friends and family members.

Giving Voice to Values was originally developed as part of a curriculum for business schools. Its genesis came from the recent ethical crises in business, exemplified by Enron and many of the financial institutions on Wall Street. It seems that many people often fail to voice their objections to morally questionable behaviors within the workplace, even when those behaviors clearly run counter to the individual's internal moral compass.

The routine courses in ethics that are offered in most business schools have apparently failed to prepare graduates to speak and act on their values once out in the workplace. Gentile attributes this to the fact that most of those courses devote extensive time to analyzing ethical issues, rather than helping students develop the skills necessary to take action when they find themselves confronting moral dilemmas. The main point of Giving Voice to Values is to help readers develop mental scripts and implementation plans that they can use to voice their own values in a given situation, and to do so without appearing judgmental of colleagues.

The book is full of examples that will be familiar to many readers, along with various actionable ideas for addressing the values conflicts these situations create. Overall this is a very useful book that can help us all be more effective in standing up for our personal values.

Jay Haley is widely acclaimed as a pioneering therapist and master teacher. One of the founders of family therapy, his prolific work influenced generations of therapists. He is the author of 19 books on many aspects of therapy. He holds degrees from the University of California in Los Angeles, Berkeley, and Stanford University. He has served as Professor at the University of Maryland, Howard University, the University of Pennsylvania and US International University. He was Director of Family Therapy Research at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic and Co-Founder of the Family Therapy Institute of Washington, D.C

Classic book by great therapist and iconoclast on family therapy with "schizophrenics"

In the mid-1980s psychoanalysis (Freudianism) was still the dominant paradigm in clinical pschology graduate programs and in the "mental health" system, but it looked as if family therapy might soon be replacing psychoanalysis. Dr Salvador Minuchin had become a national celebrity among those training to be therapists due to his extraordinary success treating anorexics (over 90% cure rate) with family therapy. Virginia Satir had also attracted interest with her videos showing her getting difficult people to communicate openly with each other. This all happened before Psychiatry had cemented its marriage to the pharmaceutical companies.(This marriage reached fruition in the 1990s, disappointing people like me--I got fired from a family theray clinic in 1989 for doing real family therapy and encouraging patients to get off psych drugs; the psychiatrist there did not approve.)Haley became interested in therapy while studying film in grad school in the 1950s. After he got his MA in media studies Haley switched direction and studied hypnotherapy with the great Milton H.Erickson M.D. (about whom Jay wrote Uncommon Therapy, his other greatest book--he wrote over 20 books) and then worked with Gregory Bateson on mapping communication difficulties in groups.Haley co-authored the first paper on the double-bind. When Haley started off, anyone who wasn't a psychoanalyst was considered a heretic--Jay embraced the part with zeal. Jay wasn't interested in baroque theories or the self-indulgent one-upmanship status games rife in the Freudian field. He was interested in promoting change. Like radical psychiatrists Thomas Szasz and R D Laing (and other leading family therapists in THOSE DAYS) Jay rejected the idea of mental illness. He had the courage to remain faithful to his beliefs as he got old and as the family therapy field sold out to bio-psychiatry, compromising its "systemic" non-linear, non causal paradigm when it came to "schizophrenics" or "bipolars" or ADHD kids--by now they probably include most groups. Once the model was compromised, family therapists had a rationalization for justifying pushing psychiatric drugs.
Jay discovered that even using the word "schizophrenic" so biased the therapists whom he was training that they would sabotage their own work promoting change in the family. Leaving Home is I think Haley's best book--it is derived from his work doing family therapy with young "schizophrenics." It is one of the 10 most important books on therapy ever written, and should be required reading for everyone in the "mental health" field.
Jay (with whom I studied in 1988, a year after I trained with Minuchin) realized that the most important therapeutic task was to get the "identified patient"--the young man or woman who had trouble leaving home --out of the sick role. The second task (which was connected to the first task) was to address the problems BETWEEN the parents, although Jay
preferred an indirect method, as explained in the book. (I have found the kind of direct approach to couple counseling used by eg Minuchin is often a neceessary supplement to Jay's indirect approach.) Nevertheless all leading family therapists in those days would have agreed that understanding the dynamics of the family is the sine qua non for change. As Jay explains he believed that in the family with a "schizophrenic" young adult who is wary of leaving home and becoming successful in schoool or a job, the relationship between Mom and Dad is conflicted and tenuous.Johnny is unconsciously terrified if he leaves home Mom and Dad will split up.Mom and Dad are also afraid. This dynamic explains why the family becomes frozen, and can't get through the leaving home/empty nest stage of the family life cycle.Jay Haley shows (he includes real transcripts) how he helped Mary/Johnny to leave home, and Mom and Dad to stay together or accept breaking up. (Unfortunately the most common "solution" today is promoted by the mental health system: Mary or Johnny is labeled schizophrenic or bipolar by psychiatrists, placed on zombifying "meds" and inducted into a career as a chronic mental patient. Mom and Pop now have a reason to stay together: to take care of Mary, make sure she takes her "meds" and to mourn her tragic plight.). Jay's common-sense approach is a refreshing relief from both Freudian and biochemical psychobabble about "schizophrenia." Jay treated the so-called patient with dignity. He treated him/her as fully competent, and he pushed the parents to recognize their adult child's competence. Although Haley's methods reflected his own style (which the therapist can modify as radically as she sees fit), his analysis and therapeutic methodology is relevant to every therapist dealing with families with "disturbed young people." Furthermore his methodology can be used with completely different populations-- thus this book should be studied by every beginning therapist. Jay realized that in order to get the young person out of the sick role the therapist has to get them off "medication," off of "anti-psychotics." Jay realized these drugs are mentally dis--abling (now confirmed by Robert Whitaker's new book Anatomy of an Epidemic) and he spoke out against them,again and again--even after family therapy had embraced the medical model(the so-called psycho-educational model) and thus had an excuse to accept their role in helping the psychiatrist to push these drugs. For his entire life Jay courageously and vociferously opposed the long term use of "anti-psychotic" drugs.(As he explains he accepted the use for brief periods under certain circumstances.) Jay was a friend and ally of anti-drugging psychiatrist Dr Peter Breggin, author of Toxic Psychiatry.(And they were both whipping boys of NAMI.) The book also demonstrated Haley's wit and acuity as a social critic. His 8 page witty and insightful (in the tradition of Foucault) discussion of the difference between a therapist and a social control agent should be required reading for all aspiring therapists--or anyone who is paid to work with people. I should warn readers--reading this book may make it difficult for you to adjust to your role in the mental health system today, which is not only oriented toward social control but also toward transforming children AND adults into life-long consumers of psych drugs in order to create and maintain a market for the pharmaceutical industry. Excellent book for working with disturbed young people

Jay Haley is a major contributor and 'big name' with strategic family therapy. This is one of his most important works. As a former family therapist working in a school-based 'at risk' program for teens this is one of the best resources for helping youths with a problem of 'leaving home.'

This book addresses the many disturbances a teen or young adult can have [as well as adults who have not 'left home' due to family issues even in their adult years].

This book addresses many of the common themes of family therapy that addresses the teen who is experiencing various sorts of delinquency, misbehavior, emotional troubles, and angst.

Haley and Cloe Madanes are the two writers that I used the most often. This is one book that you should have in your library.

Really good, but needs to clarify his definition of "Marriag

This is an exceptional book of its kind -- I usually loathe so called "Self-Help" books, but I find the author's "Imago" theory -- based on the belief that we subconciously seek out partners that resemble our parents because they trigger childhood wounds and/or parts of ourselves we have disowned, and the reason for this is that our subconcious has a deep yearning for those wounds to be healed, and for us to reclaim our shadow parts and become whole again. Is that long-winded enough ??? There's no magic answers here, but reading this book you may begin to understand why you repeat the same destructive behaviors in relationships, and begin to realize that far from being something that's beyond your control, it is in fact patterns that your subconcious is deliberately recreating, and will in fact continue to do so until you conciously decide to heal.
However, I find his assertion that complete healing is only possible within the context of a committed marriage to be a complete fallacy, and I base this assertion on experience, on individuals I know who have made incredible healing breakthroughs as single people. Yes, the guarantee of a committed lifelong partner and a commitment to each other's healing creates a stable and permanent environment for healing and growth to happen, but such healing and growth is possible outside the context of a marriage. It may involve more work and more commitment on the part of the individual, but believe me, its possible.

Great for someone who wants to understand.

Have you ever wrestled with youself when you want to call a girlfriend for the fifth time in a day? Ever immediately think that when someone doesn't answer the phone or return a call immediately, that something is falling apart in the relationship or that they are leaving you? Do you over-try to make someone like you? How about the flip side of this... do you run for cover if a relationship gets to close? Do you become more cold or callous towards your partner the warmer they become toward you?
I was always a hold-out on getting therapy until I had a second affair on my wife. At that point, the pattern of things I was doing became very obvious, but I didn't understand why I kept wanting to make sure I had an escape route from my relationships.
On the advice of my counselor, I went to pick up "Getting the Love You Want" guide for couples, but I also picked up this book as I felt it focused more on the individual. It made sense to me that if I didn't straighten myself out, how could I work on a relationship. I've thoroughly enjoyed working through this book (about 1/3 though so far) and it's written in a way that, for me, sparks thoughts constantly. I've noticed much more about myself than I ever did before and I feel like I'm getting the understanding I need so that I can move forward in being able to be in a mutually healthy relationship. Even in the beginning 1/3 of the book, I now see that the kind of person I marry (twice) and the kind of person I had an affair with (twice as I said before) are quite different from each other but EXTREMELY consistant to the other in their category. But I also see consistancy throughout all the people involved as well.
The excercises should be done slowly, if you breeze through them you can't be very serious about working out the issues as most require honest exploration and consideration.
All in all, I'm quite pleased with this book and the new experience of learning something about myself. In many ways, I've felt I've gotten as much from this book as I have my therapy, though I think the balance of having a third party to talk to is very beneficial as well. I've liked this so much, I've seriously considered going to one of the workshops.
Edit: I wanted to add, I have found it helpful later in the book to keep a journal as often, the reading has triggered thoughts, questions and revelations that I wanted to remember for myself as well as discuss with my counselor.
Further, this book has been terrific in pointing out the type of people I'm attracted to, and why. This kind of information is instrumental in development and maturing in present or furture relations.

A Challenging Experience

This book is not handing out easy answers. The books main focus is helping you dig up your personal info. Such things as Upbringing, Dating History, Sexual History, Self-Opinion, Personality, Dreams, etc. When you understand more about yourself, you understand what you need.
A bit of warning though, Dr. Hendrix's book could leave you depressed at times. The exercises are very personal in nature and can reopen old wounds, traumas, etc. In the middle I asked myself "Is there any hope for me?" Hendrix answers with a firm, undeniable yes. And its true.
I would recommend it to anyone at any age who is willing to do some soul searching, emotional understanding, and self awareness.
