Excellent book with lovely pictures & explanations! Even the locals were surprised about all the places i knew in just a 12 day trip. A salesman in Mombasa wanted to buy that book from me! A must have for anyone visiting Kenya, even for a few days. The dictionary at the end is very useful. Locals love it when you speak their language, that's an add on to bargaining as well!

Decent book, could use more editorial

The sections I've read of the book so far are well written and easy to follow, and typically have good examples.
But there were a couple areas I was dissapointed in: 1: The authors should have given a bit more advice on which classes are now preferred, which classes programmers really use, etc. Examples: In the Collections Framework section, I would have appreciated more advice about how to decide which is the best collection class to use, some guidelines or something; Java 2 has LOTS of collection implementations to choose from. The same is true for the java.io section; which file/io routines to programmers really use. How important is buffered IO in the real world? Is it worth the extra steps to code, etc. 2: The examples were generally good, though there are some changes. First of all, examples were repeated frequently with a few lines changed. It would be nice to see those specific new lines highlighted in some way. Also, in some cases, I would have liked an additional, new example vs. just repeating and modifying the previous example. But the examples weren't bad, certainly on a par with other books. I still would recommend the book, but not as a sole reference or tutorial.

Herbert Schildt is the Best

This review is less a review than an endorsement---unpaid. Regarding my credentials, I have written software for a (good) living for decades. Besides many books by others, I've read several of Mr. Schildt's books, from those in C in the last century to those in Java in this one. All of his have been outstanding. In the blurb on the back of one of his books, it states that Herbert Schildt is the world's best writer on programming languages. High praise indeed. But true!

Great book

I found this book very useful for learning Java (I am using it while I also read "Thinking in Java"). I am a beginning programmer, knowing a little html and vbscript so I don't have a background of C++ or C under my belt. This book takes you step by step and explains concepts that you build on to understand object oriented programming, classes, methods and so on. If you know C++, you won't have a problem at all. The examples are perfect if you are patient enough to type them in. I didn't find the downloadable .lst code very helpful, but the examples are correct in this book.

About the Author
Mary B. Grosvenor, M.S., R.D. Mary Grosvenor received her B.A. degree in English from Georgetown University and her M.S. in Nutrition Sciences from the University of California at Davis. She is a registered dietitian with experience in public health, clinical nutrition, and nutrition research. She has published in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of nutrition and cancer and methods of assessing dietary intake. She has taught introductory nutrition at the community college level and currently lives with her family in a small town in Colorado. She is continuing her teaching and writing career and is till involved in nutrition research via the electronic superhighway.

Lori A. Smolin, Ph.D. Lori Smolin received her B.S. degree from Cornell University, where she studied human nutrition and food science. She received her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Her doctoral research focused on B Vitamins, homocysteine accumulation, and genetic defects in homocysteine metabolism. She complete postdoctoral training both at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she studied human obesity, and at the University of California at San Diego, where she studied genetic defects in amino acid metabolism. She has published in these areas in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Smolin is currently at the University of Connecticut, where she teaches both in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. Courses she has taught include introductory nutrition, lifecycle nutrition, food preparation, nutritional biochemistry, and introductory biology.

The best summary of basic nutritional science I've seen

I picked this up at my local library, as I have with many health and nutrition books, but this is the first one that I am going to buy. Most nutrition books I see are full of either iffy science, too much biased opinion, or they're just too complicated for me to follow. This book gives a brief but thorough explanation of all the basics. The text and pictures are concise and easy to follow. I have very little scientific background and I was able to understand all the stuff about mono- di- and polysaccharides, amino acids, enzymes, and all the other molecular stuff and their practical functions in the body. If you're confused about our state of nutritional knowledge today then start here. I wish I'd had a book like this years ago.

More than pleasantly surprised

A family member bought this book. I found it sitting on a shelf, glanced at the cover and involuntarily thought to myself "uh oh, granola time," and came within a heartbeat of dismissing the book out of hand. Luckily, I did not. Instead, I read the introduction, and then found myself -- almost in a state of disbelief -- reading on and on. I was amazed to find that the book is not just one more new age book muttering away about a world none of us really lives in. To the contrary, the book is written by someone with a profound understanding of everyday reality, who is astonishingly good at sharing that understanding. This is simply a beautiful little book, beautifully written. I would be curious to know if others are reacting to this book the way I am: I feel compelled to rave about it. I read the book for the first time weeks ago, yet tonight in the grocery store I found myself slowing down, marvelling at the sight of my daughter gaily picking out tomatoes, and consciously basking in the moment. And I'm a middle-aged Republican, not particularly predisposed to spiritual impulses! The author of this book has something timeless and important to impart, and he does so with unusual intelligence and grace. I really like this book -- indeed, I hope I'm forgiven for suspecting that it is a work of genius. I also hope that the author happens to read this review, because he should know how much his work is appreciated!

If you are interested in meditation, or, if you want to find

a way to slow the pace of your busy world, Jon Kabat-Zinn can express the "out of body" concepts of meditation in a way that no one else can.
You get to choose: "Wherever you go...." is a book that can be explored over and over, that can start you on a path to a new habit to find within yourself what you need to survive today's busy world; that can help you find a new habit to renew the life you lead. Or, utilize its message just as a brief "chapter read" to jump start the positive if you are not looking for a lifelong habit.
It is very difficult to express, in words, the inner activities that result in becoming comfortable in your own skin. Kabat-Zinn writes thoughtfully and honestly about how he has accomplished this, and what things might work for you. There are many treasures in this book. For me, his ability to describe the rewards one gets from practiced patience, and to impress upon the reader the simplicity of the "body scan" and how it can lead to the habit of lying down meditation are two examples of things that readers can take away at any given time from his book.
Many self-help readers today are looking for the "quick fix" or some small coping practice they can employ to keep their days positive. In some ways, in addition to helping you understand why meditation works and why it can change your life, Kabat-Zinn writes a poetic and illuminating version of the "one minute help" chapters that the "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" series provided to these readers in the busy working world.
When you couple his vision and ideas with the lovely verse that liberally sprinkles his book (Kabir, Thoreau and Whitman are favorites) you have a quiet and inspirational message that can do more to help you understand and eliminate your stress than can all the meditation, control and organizational techniques advocated in today's America could ever do.
Read "Wherever you go, there you are" and learn how mindfulness can change the course of your daily life for the better. It works.

In The Timeless Here and Now

My best friend tends to take life slowly and accept it on its own terms...and that facet of his personality has always driven me crazy! :-) The words "slow" and "languid" could never be applied to my lifestyle. I have always hurried through life at such a frantic pace...regretting yesterday and dreaming of tomorrow, yet never truly living in the moment. A year ago I happened upon this book, and it has made an enormous impact on my life. This literary jewel took me to a place I'd never visited before: the realm of 'moment mindfulness.' As the author so eloquently writes,

The lack of mindfulness "...scavenges to fill time, conspires with my mind to keep me unconscious, lulled in a fog of numbness to a certain extent. It has me unavailable to others, missing the play of the light on the table, the smells in the room, the energies of the moment. Stillness, insight, and wisdom arise only when we can settle into being complete in this moment, without having to seek or hold on to or reject anything."

Learning how to immerse myself in this moment, and this moment alone, has been incredibly difficult. Yet the serenity, peace and soul satisfaction experienced therein are priceless. The "Non-Judging" chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Realizing my propensity to constantly evaluate my experiences and hold them up against expectations and standards that I create, often out of fear, has been tremendously liberating. I largely thank this book, and my best friend, for that lesson learned. :-)

I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone. I find it especially useful to my clients who struggle with childhood abuse issues. Therapy clients who suffer from bi-polar, COPD or Borderline Personality disorders could also be helped significantly from learning the meditation techniques in this book.

We exist as we are, on this plane, in this realm, at this moment in the timeless here and now. And that is enough....more than enough.

Perfect for teens that are already doing devotions or just starting out

My daughter was looking for a devotion book that she could use part of the time. She has another book that she gets from church but it doesn't complete the entire year. I wanted something that really related more to teens than adults. I saw this book at a local store but it was cheaper on Amazon so I ordered it.

The book is a small book (about 4 x 5 inches). Each devotion starts with a ible verse and then has one page to read and some questions to think about. What my daughter really likes about this book is that she can do it even during her busy schedule as a busy high school kid. She can take just a few minutes each night to read the devotion. I like that each one has a scripture attached to it so that it brings it back to the bible. My daughter keeps a journal along with this where she writes down the answer to the questions. At the end of each devotion, there is also a simple prayer. I think this is great for kids that struggle with knowing what to pray.

This devotion book really relates to kids and that was really what I was looking for. The other book she uses is an adult book and I think sometimes even though she is in high school, it just doesn't relate to what is going on in her life. This book has topics like - homework, speaking up for what you believe, social media and internet, gossip, etc... It really is topics that kids can relate to. Each devotion is also short enough that busy kids have time to do them and they are not overwhelming.

The only thing that I think could make this better would be if the book had 365 devotions in it so she could use it all year. I really like this and actually ordered the one for guys for my younger teen son.

I loved the loving and positive messages throughout the book

I bought this for my ninth grade daughter and had low expectations for the price. I was pleasantly suprised when it arrived! I loved the loving and positive messages throughout the book, thought they did a great job covering diverse topics and will buy from this publisher in the future. However my daughter thinks it's slightly too young for her, but this could be because like most teens she wants to be older than she is. Overall I am very happy and felt it was more than worth the money.

After citing won-lost records and World Series appearances, fans are reduced to subjective references to motivating players and setting strategy. Statistical analyst James, famous for the Baseball Abstract, does his best to provide a basis for comparing, say, Walter Alston with Casey Stengel. The book is loosely structured by decade, with James analyzing each era's best, worst, and most influential skippers on the basis of such elaborate criteria as, Does the manager platoon his players or use a set lineup? Does he prefer veterans over young players? Does he like his pitchers to complete their starts or is he a "quick hook" ? As always, James' opinions are thought provoking and entertainingly expressed. he's done it again

Without a doubt, Bill James is THE man who can best shed light on those forgotten heroes of yesteryear and today along with focusing on what or who are the greats.

By tackling the subject of mgrs. he's added another feather in his cap regarding baseball history. The book is simply chock full of astute observations, great stats, and even better off-the-wall stories.

The way the book is laid out also does not overwhelm you because it covers the entire history of the game. James breaks it down by decade and gives you a good feel for the eras and the managers who made them.

I can hardly wait to see what James tackles next.

A great book about a neglected topic.

There are a few other books that deal exclusively

with baseball managers and I've read most of them.

None deal with the subject as objectively or with as

much detail and enthusiasm as Bill James' new offering. Besides the

celebrated managers of baseball history such as Stengel,

McGraw, Mack and others, there are great pieces on lesser

known managers such as Bill McKechnie, Fred Haney, Spencer

Abbot and Billy Southworth. James also details a few objective

ways to discuss and evaluate a manager's accomplishments.

The book maps out the trends of various managerial strategies

such as the sacrifice bunt and the use of a bullpen. Anyone who

loves baseball will find this book hard to put down. And it'll make

you think. As James says "managers are fascinating people" and this

book makes for many hours of fascinating reading.

A good book about a topic that doesn't receive much attention

How exciting can a book about managers really be? I am a huge fan of the Bill James Historical Abstract and I like a lot of James' other work (What Happened to the Hall of Fame, etc). So I was willing to give this book a try. 4 stars is probably generous - 3.5 would be better - but James does as good a job as can be expected given the material he has to work with. I really am a huge baseball fan but I found this to be a bit dry at times.

The format is similar to the Historical Abstract - it has the "Decade in a box" feature which provides some common data about each decade. Interspersed with the decade boxes are articles about managers and other happenings from the decade.

James profiles about 20-25 managers in much greater detail - examining their tendencies, their styles and the players who played for them. The manager profiles are definitely the best part of the book.

James does attempt to come up with a rating system for managers, which is pretty good. He also attempts to come up with what he thinks would be a useful statistical record for managers. This book was written in the mid-90s, and the proposed stats are almost a mirror image of what Baseball Prospectus manager profiles each year. Give James a point there if they really are working from his template.

If you want to learn more about baseball history from a different perspective, this is a great book to check out. I just wish that James had covered more managers in detail, since that was the best section of the book. Maybe someday we'll get an updated paperback version that includes Joe Torre and some of the more interesting old-time managers.
