An informative guide for those looking to enhance their karate training.Swanson's debut is a scientific guide to the stances, movements, and techniques of karate.Swanson, a professor of biology and biomechanics at Salve Regina University, uses his scientific training to help teachers and students better understand the tenets of karate. The many illustrations (ably provided by Nigro) show everything from proper alignment of a striking surface (say, a fist or a foot) to how one's body should move from the beginning to the end of a thrust. The first part of the book focuses on technique, with sections on stances, thrusting, kicking, striking, and blocking. The guide does more than demonstrate how positions should look; Swanson takes the time to explain how each should feel and which muscle groups should be engaged throughout the process. The second part explains the science behind how our joints and muscles work as well as how the body keeps its balance. This section also includes a brief primer on “the application of kinesiological principles to karate,” which outlines ways to get more force into moves by increasing mass and, crucially, speed. The last section deals with the notion of “internal movement,” essentially a system of muscle retraction and counter moves that aid in perfecting efficient and powerful techniques. While many students mistakenly think of this process as simply hip wiggling, Swanson shows that the process is more focused on intra-abdominal pressure, and he explains how the proper tensioning and contracting of certain muscles are key to quick and powerful movements. Swanson's writing is clear and informative, and his pure love of the art shines through. This book is not for karate neophytes, and the terms used will be confusing to unfamiliar readers. About the Author
J. D. Swanson holds a PhD in integrative biosciences and a fifth-degree black belt from the International Shotokan Karate Federation. He is an official ISKF instructor, examiner, and judge, having studied under both Okazaki and Yaguchi sensei. Swanson began his martial studies in 1980 in his native New Zealand. He moved to the United States in 1998. He is a professor in the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Salve Regina University and the head instructor of the Shotokan karate clubs at Brown and Salve Regina Universities. J. D. Swanson resides in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

I have the privilege of training with Swanson sensei at Brown University. He leads an amazing dojo. He is, far and away, the most knowledgeable instructor I've ever had in 12 years in the martial arts. His background in science, his experience in karate and his passion are some of the reasons this book stands out and is a must read for everyone at every level.

Geneolgy Charts Interwoven with Biblical Stories

This is a well written account of Joseph of Arimathea and Jesus with terrific genealogy charts and stories. The book sheds new information in several areas of conventional thought and is well worth the time to read. Perhaps you will discover a connection to your past by reading this book.

All genealogies of the Jews were destroyed in 70 AD by Titus so proving any link back to the original Israelites would be impossible.

John Owen presents one of the most rigorous defenses of the Reformed doctrine of justification ever written. This reprint of The Doctrine of Justification by Faith, taken from the 19th century edition produced by the Presbyterian Board of Publications, will serve as a welcome improvement for many readers. Latin and Greek quotations have been moved to footnotes, and English translations are given for those large blocks of material that Owen left untranslated. It also contains a new introductory essay by Carl R. Trueman, which analyzes Owen's treatment of justification in light of the highly charged debates of his day. While Owen's work is technical and challenging, this edition is an effort to make his profound exposition more manageable.

About the Author
John Owen (1616–1683) was an English Nonconformist church leader, theologian, and academic administrator at the University of Oxford. On 29 April he preached before the Long Parliament. In this sermon, and in his Country Essay for the Practice of Church Government, which he appended to it, his tendency to break away from Presbyterianism to the Independent or Congregational system is seen. Like John Milton, he saw little to choose between "new presbyter" and "old priest." He became pastor at Coggeshall in Essex, with a large influx of Flemish tradesmen. In March 1651, Cromwell, as Chancellor of Oxford University, gave him the deanery of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and made him Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University in September 1652; in both offices he succeeded the Presbyterian, Edward Reynolds. During his eight years of official Oxford life Owen showed himself a firm disciplinarian, thorough in his methods, though, as John Locke testifies, the Aristotelian traditions in education underwent no change. With Philip Nye he unmasked the popular astrologer, William Lilly, and in spite of his share in condemning two Quakeresses to be whipped for disturbing the peace, his rule was not intolerant. Anglican services were conducted here and there, and at Christ Church itself the Anglican chaplain remained in the college. While little encouragement was given to a spirit of free inquiry, Puritanism at Oxford was not simply an attempt to force education and culture into "the leaden moulds of Calvinistic theology." Owen, unlike many of his contemporaries, was more interested in the New Testament than in the Old. During his Oxford years he wrote Justitia Divina, an exposition of the dogma that God cannot forgive sin without an atonement; Communion with God, Doctrine of the Saints' Perseverance, his final attack on Arminianism; Vindiciae Evangelicae, a treatise written by order of the Council of State against Socinianism as expounded by John Biddle; On the Mortification of Sin in Believers, an introspective and analytic work; Schism, one of the most readable of all his writings; Of Temptation, an attempt to recall Puritanism to its cardinal spiritual attitude from the jarring anarchy of sectarianism and the pharisaism which had followed on popularity and threatened to destroy the early simplicity.

This book delivers exactly what it promises. It is an accessible guide which accompanies the reader through a range of complex concepts. Each theory is clearly explained, critically analysed and supported by anecdotes which bring the abstract to life. In addition there is direct application as to how these ideas can influence on a wider scale in the classroom, the staffroom and on senior management in education. About the Author

Bob Bates was an Executive Officer in the Civil Service for 20 years. During this time, he worked for seven years as an employment coach and mentor to people with disabilities. On leaving the Civil Service he set up his own management and training consultancy, The Arundel Group, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year. He had a break from consultancy in the mid-1990s to take up a lecturing career, during which time he gained two Masters degrees and a PhD in Education. He has taught over 1000 teachers on graduate and post-graduate programmes at two universities and in adult education centres. Many of the teachers on these programmes work with children, young people and adults with learning disabilities and additional needs.

Bob has written four books. The Little Book of BIG Management Theories, written with Jim McGrath, was published by Pearson in 2014. It was the Chartered Management Institute’s (CMI) practical management book of the year in 2014 and was on WH Smith’s best-sellers list for nine months. It is being translated into seventeen languages. His first solo book, The Little Book of Big Coaching Models, published by Pearson in 2015, was also a best-seller and was described by Sir Dave Brailsford (Team Sky Cycling Director) as a ‘great read’. It is currently being translated into German and Thai. His third book, Learning Theories Simplified, was published by SAGE in autumn 2015, and his fourth, A Quick Guide to Special Needs and Disabilities, published by SAGE in autumn 2016.

Bob shares his time these days between writing, working with European partners on projects related to disability, teaching adult education teachers and doing voluntary work for a charity that promotes health and education in the Gambia. His wife has worked in special needs education for over 25 years, and gave Bob the idea for this book as she keeps telling him that all of her children and young people are special, some just have more needs than others.

Must have for education courses!

Great little book. I am taking education courses for certification and this book covers all the theorists which keep popping up in the courses. It also has a great section on learning styles and sections on other topics such as mentoring, tutoring, classroom management, lesson planning, and behavior management. A great resource for anyone taking an education course. It simplifies a comprehensive range of theories without oversimplifying them. It also provides examples of how theory can be applied.

Awesome book, bad shipping

I had seen the book before and loved it, the content is pretty good. I needed it recently for my thesis project so I paid two-day shipping and it didn't arrive within those days. It arrived as if I hadn't paid any shipping, and one corner of the book was a bit smashed. The book is five stars but this store and it's shipping isn't.

Not bad for the price.

The book is more a glossary than a handbook. The author's 70 topics are touched on very superficially with just enough of an introduction to make the reader want to learn more about them - by consulting other resources. Many of the topics in this book are covered more adequately in Nancy Tague's The Quality Toolbox, but the ones that Tague doesn't cover are nicely introduced here. There is definitely value in this book, but I think I would have sent it back if it had cost much more than it did. If you haven't had any other introduction to quality or business management tools, this could be a good start. Or, find a copy of the table of contents and do a google search to learn just as much, if not more. If you're a serious practitioner or student of the subject, pay the price for something meatier like Tague or Breyfogle.

A MUST-READ FOR ALL OCD SUFFERERS!

My friend bought this for me for my birthday. If she hadn't gotten it for me, I would never have touched another book about OCD. I tried reading some other ones, but I found them to be depressing with no real solutions. They seemed to elaborate more on the symptoms, which triggered and made my OCD worse. Dr. Grayson is a true OCD genius. He talks directly to you in a compassionate and understanding way. The book teaches you how to set up your own recovery program. I have never heard anyone describe OCD the way he does. You will develop a better understanding of yourself. I never thought anyone would be able to tell me anything new about OCD that I didn't already know, but he has. For someone who has received no professional help in 17 years of suffering, this book has been a source of hope. I highly recommend this book to anyone with OCD, especially to those of you who are skeptical like I was before I picked it up!

Clear path to recovery

The author presents a very clear outline of a self-help treatment plan that can be used by anyone in their struggle with OCD. Beahvioral-cognitive techniques are described as well as the role of medication. The opening descriptions of the disorder can be a good tool in trying to educate others about OCD, and the sections about how to set up a self-directed recovery plan are very clear and concise. The tone is caring and the author seems to understand what it feels like to have OCD as well as how to treat it from a therapist's point of view. I especially found the section on cognitive techniques very helpful, as the author describes how to use them correctly.

This is best one for OCD. It has explained the orgin and nature of OCD...The answer lies in the question - - THis is what OCD is about.The author discusses several cognitive techniques but also warns not to use some cognitive techniques. He selectively picks up best ones to fit OCD problem.
Also discusses Responsibilty ocd, pure 'O' ocd problem. Lot of techniques tailored for specific forms of OCD.

Great read!

This is an amazing book for anybody interested in the dark side of entrepreneurship. Professor Arend is a well-known expert in strategy and entrepreneurship who uses plain terms to illustrate in an easy to understand language the different facets of wicked entrepreneurship. In very brief chapters that can be rather quickly read but much longer reflected upon, he describes what evil is, the context in which it thrives and how evil economic and social transactions are perpetrated. He also elaborates on who the perpetrators, facilitators and victims are, their characteristics, motives and the consequences of evil transactions. He proceeds with providing salient case studies to illustrate wicked entrepreneurship in action.
Finally, he develops a new theory of wicked entrepreneurship that can be put to the test in future empirical studies.
This book is a great read for anybody interested in the dark side of entrepreneurship
