Beware of the "Hiss": Psychopaths Go To Work

Robert Hare, creator of the "Psychopath Checklist" goes back to work, tackling the fraught issue of conscience-less individuals in the workplace. He is joined by co-author Paul Babiak, a management consultant. This book should be a must-purchase for anyone in human resources, or even a small business owner. The very nature of psychopaths- charming, cunning, charismatic, and convincing on the surface, while hiding deceptive machinations, make them the most dangerous potential hires in a firm. With tales culled from real life, the book recounts disasters, abuses of power and privilege, and the Machiavellian mindset of those who exhibit psychopathic tendencies in the workplace, who will "win at any cost." The book offers a sound mix of terminology, explanations, case studies, and solutions to avoiding hiring someone in the first place who may be in the psychopathic spectrum. Their advice is particularly compelling in the age of LinkedIn, with the potential for doctored and fraudulent resumes and references and self-generated skill sets. The authors make a strong case for cross-checking and double checking references and credentials before hiring an employee, and being aware of the inherent dangers in our current fast-paced and changeable business climate where finding solutions to tough problems may be just what someone in the psychopathic spectrum may offer, but with a hidden price.

Beware the Ides of March! No, really, there are FAR too many whack jobs in high power positions in this world! It does not matter your political, religious, or whatever stance... There are folks out there that will play you out till the end. Those who don't just address problems, let alone just fire or relocate you. These individuals sometimes our bosses, managers, higher ups. Their jobs are not easy, but they are necessary. What isn't necessary is all the garbage and abuse they dish out on to subordinates. I am not talking about improving the business or attempting to set high goals and obtain them. What I am talking about is the bosses / managers who will step all over anyone anywhere for any reason to get ahead, cover their six, or for jollies. Bosses / managers who will get into your personal business and lives for sport. Those who lack any empathy, sympathy, or understanding of any kind. This book covers that and warns you of it.
To me, it seems that our modern day corporate America is colder and more full of it than ever before! And for the record, they were not that nice years ago...! We as workers need to be aware of this and cover ourselves and fellow workers against such individuals and institutions that promote or allow said negative behavior - people.

Snakes in Suits reveals a range of behaviors which seem to congregate similar individuals into the nooks and crannies of power.
These people have mutual goals and attract one another.. as long as they are useful to them.
The book is a primmer about people who make up any profession, business, social units of all kinds.
But they do not play by the rules most of us would teach to our children. So learning how they
think, what they value or not, is really a prerequisite for our survival. The instinct of a psychopathic tending
person is destructive to everything we value as a society, a company, or relationship. The prevalence of them
today has made much our society disfunctional because psychopaths do not value equal rights, justice, open
government, freedom of speech, and certainly not democracy. Lying is a primary instinct, and manipulation for personal gain is all that is
important to them. The normal check and balances of caring, fairness, honesty, and guilt are absent in them.
Toward the end of the book a good deal of time is spend on how to deal with them, how to avoid direct conflict,
and how to disentangle yourself from relationships with them. Psychopathic individuals of varying degree are
dominating the important institutions in the American culture, government, schools, and all power centers of society.
These individuals behave in ways which ultimately destroys whatever it is that they become involved in.

Allan G. Bluman is a professor emeritus at the Community College of Allegheny County, South Campus, near Pittsburgh. He has taught mathematics and statistics for over 35 years. He received an Apple for the Teacher award in recognition of his bringing excellence to the learning environment at South Campus. He has also taught statistics for Penn State University at the Greater Allegheny (McKeesport) Campus and at the Monroeville Center. He received his master's and doctor's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.

In addition to Elementary Statistics: A Step by Step Approach (Eighth Edition ©2012) and Elementary Statistics: A Brief Version (Fifth Edition ©2010), Al is a co-author on a liberal arts mathematics text published by McGraw-Hill, Math in Our World (2nd Edition ©2011). Al also the author of for mathematics books in the McGraw-Hill DeMystified Series. They are Pre-Algebra, Math Word Problems, Business Math, and Probability.

Al Bluman is married and has two sons and a granddaughter.

Book is excellent - Kindle rental not so much

Book is excellent - Kindle software on PC not so much. This book was required for a statistics course and has been critical for success in the class. I prefer my textbooks in electronic format and so the rental choice was perfect because it was far less than buying and it is electronic.

The problem is not with the text but with the Kindle software on the PC. It crashes constantly. I can do a quick search or page through a few pages and down it goes. It's also not available for the Kindle Cloud (I should have looked for this) but I'm pretty new to Kindles and textbooks. Please be aware of this limitation before you commit to this purchase. I don't know for sure but suspect that the rental has something to do with some of the limitations but the PC Kindle reader is very unstable.

Even with these problems, I would still get the electronic version.

Robert Scholes is Research Professor of Modern Culture and Media, Brown University. He is the author of numerous books, including most recently "The Crafty Reader" and "The Rise and Fall of English," both published by Yale University Press.

Kelley Winters has compiled a remarkable collection of short essays examining the diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder [GID] in the DSM and the role it has played in creating mental health problems for transgender people. Dr. Winters has long been a leader in deconstructing the psychiatric labeling of people with atypical gender expressions, and this book brings the discussion up-to-date, with a front row examination of the APA Committee formed to determine the fate of the GID diagnosis.

Gender Madness in American Psychiatry examines a broad array of issues from how the GID diagnosis is used to justify reparative therapy for gender-variant children and the historical context for psychiatrically labeling of sexual minorities. Dr. Winters critiques the half-baked diagnoses of transvestic fetishism and autognyephila with a sharp scalpel, presenting lucid evidence for the lack of scientific data to justify these gender-related diagnoses. Most importantly, Dr. Winters outlines the damage caused to transgender, transsexual, and other gender nonconforming people who are labeled with a mental illness.

Could it be that the DSM-IV is unfairly biased against transgender people?

Could it be that: 1) The diagnoses that label trans people as mentally ill are based largely upon the opinion of a handful of psychiatrists imposing their view of what is socially acceptable behavior? 2) These psychiatrists base their opinion almost entirely on studies of their own patients without considering the large number of transgender people leading well-adjusted lives who don't feel the need to see a psychiatrist? 3) These psychiatrists are suspiciously relentless in challenging the credibility of anyone who seeks to challenge their opinion? 4) Their opinion ignores significant studies by other professionals showing that most individuals who transition genders have positive outcomes? 5) The diagnoses are written in a way that removes the mental illness label for a patient who undergoes reparative therapy (which claims to make an individual not trans) but not for a patient who transitions genders, even if the outcome is positive. And 6) Some of these same psychiatrists happen to specialize in reparative therapy and therefore have a vested interest in labeling trans people as mentally ill?

You'll be hard-pressed to see these statements as anything but true after reading Winters' painstakingly researched book. Winters documents how the DSM-IV diagnoses of the American Psychiatric Association came to be and why reform is needed. She carefully shows that the diagnoses are based more upon difference from societal norms than distress or impairment caused by gender dysphoria, thereby labeling all gender non-conforming individuals as mentally ill - even those not experiencing distress.

Winters demonstrates how this "official" word of the APA is then used to justify job terminations, lack of insurance coverage and other types of discrimination. Even the HRC Corporate Equality Index, which aims in part to end transgender discrimination in the workplace, inadvertently causes it according to Winters. The CEI allows a corporation to score 100% by offering mental health counseling as its only transgender health benefit, and corporations overwhelmingly chose this benefit over four others, Winters asserts, because the DSM-IV recommends reparative therapy for those who seek counseling.

Gender Madness is a must-read for those concerned that some of the psychiatrists who helped develop the DSM-IV diagnoses, and who have a vested interest in maintaining them, have lead roles in the development of the DSM-V to be released in 2012.

A great book

What some sort of psychiatrists and psychologists are doing nowadays, as others did in the past against people that have an unexpected self-perception of gender, considering pathological all that is not "expected" by old concepts, is a so big problem, for those who suffer all their lives due to these old concepts.

Winters shows that madness. The madness of these "fake gender experts".

A special book for psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors and sexologists, also for parents, teachers, for authorities, for all that are in power to manipulate the lives of others.

The madness is institutionalized

I agree with the two previous reviewers, Kelly Winters is spot on in her criticism of how the psychiatric institution in America ( also Canada ) has and is abusing transsexual as well as intersex people. These are not conditions to be treated in ways promoted by the Blanchard and ilk. It's not by being forced to touch one's own bit and that of one's therapist that one will suddenly cognite that they are " in fact " homosexual. Such witch doctor notions harm transsexual and intersex people and need to be denounced and stopped.

Huge applauds for this book.
