My favorite commentary

I am a scientist, not a Hebrew scholar, but I love this book and it, in turn, has given me a love for the book of Ruth.
A Hebrew professor once told me this was the best English language commentary on Ruth, but that doesn't do it justice. It is a joy to read. The translation is lively and the commentary is totally engrossing. Even the textual notes are accessible and worthwhile reading for the layman. An example from the notes: (The Hebrew text injects) "a note of sly and good-humored wonder: `Well, what do you know, they arrived in Bethlehem for the barley harvest--just the right time!'"

An excellent, very informative, and readable commentary

This is an excellent scholarly study of the biblical book of Ruth. It provides a large amount of information and many intelligent interpretations of incidences in the book. For example:
The book of Ruth states that ruth lay down at Boaz’s feet. How should we understand “feet”? Campbell in Anchor Bible lists citations where feet may be a euphemism for sex: Exodus 4:25, Judges 3:24, I Samuel 24:3, II Kings 18:27, Isaiah 6:3, 36:12, Ezekiel 16:25.
When Naomi sent Ruth to Boaz, didn’t she know that there was a closer relative than Boaz to her who had the first rights to marry Ruth – Mr. So and so? Campbell suggests that Naomi may have known about “So and so” but this was her “ploy to force him (Boaz) to act, or to start the ball rolling toward marriage whether to another person or to himself.”
Boaz settled the arrangement with So and so by one of the two handing the other a show. What was happening? Campbell takes the view: taking off the shoe (by “So and so”) and handing it to another (Boaz) was symbolically ceding one’s right and giving the right to another.

Anchor Bible Series

This series continues to be among the finest available. Some of the older ones could use revision, but in general they remain a gold standard. (I was a little unimpressed with the Hebrew analysis in this particular version; hence the 4 star rating.)
