somewhat helpful, but sloppy and confusing

TONS of typos - from grammatical to vital data and labels in example problems. Following such problems is extremely frustrating at times.
Lots of things are not explained before they are referred to, causing you to go to the index and find the explanation and flip back and forth. Some things are referenced and never explained at all - including data used in solutions to example problems.

Informative and Easy to Find Info

If your on a deadline and need info quickly or just don't have the time to search volume after volume for the info that gives your work the extra flavor of authenticity then this book is a must! Sure the info is available in other western reference books but you would literally have to search hundreds of volumes to locate all the facts and info included in this single book. So why make it so hard on yourself? This one book will put the info at your fingertips!

Title a bit misleading

I use this book sometimes and I like it, but I have just a few problems with it. I got this book because it was titled "Everyday Life in..." and that's what I expected to find. A 'snapshot' of everyday life. Despite its title, at least 1/3 of the book is more about the westward expansion and American Indian culture in general, which is available in greater detail from numerous other books and web sites. For an overview of western history and culture, this book is fine. But for "everyday life," a far superior book on the same topic is "Seeking Pleasure in the Old West" by David Dary.

Fascinating and valuable

While this is designed as a one-stop resource for novelists and historians dealing with the American West, it is much more. It provides a vivid portrait of the frontier and those who settled the country. It is beautifully organized, supplies the telling detail, and belongs on the reference shelves of all libraries, and in the libraries of all collectors of Old West materials, and in all history collections dealing with early Americana.
The author has a genius for gathering valuable material and presenting it in orderly fashion.

Risking All to Heal

This story is the start of a serial and does end in a cliff hanger so be warned. This is the start of Kierra's journey to healing of her mind and spirit as she has never really recovered from a vicious attack. The timing seems to be right for Chandler to step in and in days accomplish so much for her. But we see her struggle to keep things in "professional" manner and not let her heart engage but we also see a glimpse that things might not be so cut and dried for Chandler either as she is very different from his usually partners. I'll be honest abrupt cliff-hanger endings are usually a turn off but because this story is so rich and engaging I can't wait for the next installment. This is not a short part of a book but a full book that truly is a complete 1st step in these people's lives. I truly feel invested in the characters.

I'm not normally a fan of "naughty" books but this one pulled me into the story line! I couldn't put it down. I was shocked by the end which irritates me only because now I have to wait for the second book to come out, so hurry up! I must admit I'm secretly hoping for a little bit more from Keira and Daniel I am a fan for sure and would recommend this book to anyone and everyone

Mr. Wolfson studies the Kalam systematically, unfolding its philosophic origins and implications and observing its repercussions in other religions. He scrutinizes the texts of Muslim writers for their treatment of such crucial problems as the attributes of God, the Creation, causality, predestination and free will. In the process he shows how the teachings of the Koran were constantly interwoven with ideas from Greek and Oriental philosophies, Judaism, and Christianity as Islamic thought developed.

As lucidly written and intellectually stimulating as all the author's earlier books, this volume is a fitting capstone to a notable career.

Harry Wolfson spent sixty-six years at Harvard University, as undergraduate, graduate student, teacher, and professor emeritus. From 1925 until his retirement in 1958 he was Nathan Littauer Professor of Hebrew Literature and Philosophy at Harvard. He died in September 1974 at the age of 86.

The Philosophy of the Kalam is the last major work of one of the great scholars of our age. Harry Wolfson was renowned throughout the world for the depth, scope, and wisdom of his monumental volumes on the structure and growth of philosophic systems from Plato to Spinoza. This volume is a massive (over 800 pages, including the index) study of selected teachings of early Muslim philosophers/theologians, known as the Mutakallimun, whose viewpoints are known collectively as "the Kalam." The basic material was originally intended as part of a more general study of medieval Islamic thought, to be based on the limited documentation available.

This turn in was to be part of a study of the relation between philosophy and scriptural religions from Plato through Spinoza (in the seventeenth century). Published portions of the project include the Hellenistic Judaism of Philo of Alexandria. Unfortunately, Harry Austryn Wolfson (1887-1974) was unable to complete this ambitious undertaking, on which he had started work in the 1920s. Indeed, the second volume of his work on the Church Fathers, originally accepted for publication, was subjected to a thorough revision, and, in the end, never published. (For a short biography and select bibliography, see Wikipedia.)

However, as the author explains in his Preface, it had dawned on him that the methods he had used in his books on Philo and the Church Fathers could be applied to the Kalam literature already in print. He could "prepare a volume on the Kalam in which certain problems peculiar to the Kalam would be dealt with in their relation to similar problems dealt with by Philo and the Church Fathers in their common attempt to interpret Scripture in terms of philosophy and to revise philosophy in conformity with Scripture." (That is the second half of a sentence; Wolfson's style is elegant, but demands concentration from the reader.)

The problems which Wolfson chose to discuss are: (1) Attributes; (2) Koran; (3) Creation; (4) Atomism; (5) Causality; (6) Predestination and Free Will. (Those familiar with Wolfson's exposition of what Spinoza did with the ideas of earlier philosophers will recognize most of the topics.)

The book is in large part dedicated to digging out the conclusions and arguments of the Mutakallimun from the later, better-known, Arabic writings, Muslim and Jewish, in which they are embedded. This requires a consideration of how philosophical doctrines reached the early Muslim thinkers, and their early encounters with philosophical versions of Christian theology. Histories of philosophy tend to point to Greek sources; as Wolfson points out, much of the early transmission of ideas was probably through the medium of Syriac (Christian Aramaic), traceable in part in changing terminology in Arabic.

As an inevitable consequence of this "excavation" of ideas, Wolfson sometimes seem to present more argumentation than substance as he works backwards in time.

This sometimes has the advantage of revealing how much the Kalam influenced later thinkers, like Avicenna, Averroes, and Maimonides (whose own work was later taken up by the Scholastics of the Latin Church).

The Kalam represents an early stage of Muslim thought, but not its original form. For beginners in the study of Islam and its philosophical dimensions, I would suggest the comparatively brief 320 pages of A. J. Wensinck's "The Muslim Creed: Its Genesis and Historical Development" (1932), which was well-received in the Muslim world on its first publication. Unhappily, the only in-print edition of the book is very expensive; fortunately, it is available in pdf formats (one with searchable text) from archive.org (a site hosted by the Library of Congress, with which every student should be familiar), free for the trouble of downloading.

"The Philosophy of the Kalam" really should be in print, in a less-expensive paperback edition, but in fact the pricey hardcover edition is available through third-party sellers only. Fortunately, archive.org offers two PDF versions of this book, as well. One, the larger file, is a straight scan of the 770-some pages of text and bibliography (not the index), and is more readable. The other features a machine-readable text, ideal for searching; but the resolution seems fuzzy to me, and it may be a strain on your eyes. I suggest downloading both PDFS, if your hard drive has room for them.

A childless couple takes refuge in a rapidly diminishing forest on the outskirts of town, feeding a group of "intimates" who visit only to mock them. And the loneliest member of the Marxist-Maoist Party of India falls in love with the one young woman, in the poorest part of town, whom he cannot afford to wed.

Loosely based on a tourist itinerary, the stories meander through the lives of a motley array of hoykas and Brahmins, Muslims and Christians. We meet Xerox, the peddler of illegally copied books who doesn't mind having been arrested 21 times, as this seems a step up from his father's work as an excrement shoveler. Then there is Jayamma: the eighth of nine daughters, she is sent out to work because her father had only enough money to marry off six daughters. Her only comfort is getting high on DDT fumes and rubbing the buttocks of a tiny idol of baby Krishna. Adiga's India is a place of wildly disparate fortunes, where a 500-rupee meal at the Oberoi Hotel in Bombay scandalizes a construction worker who marvels at the sight of a 20-rupee note. It's a gruesome picture of existence, and the small epiphanies hit like bricks from heaven. (June)

Inspired by Balzac's La Comedie Humaine, Adiga intended to write a portrait of Indian life; as such, place and theme, rather than characters, tie together these 14 stories. Each starts with a travel vignette -- a daylong walk around a different section of Kittur -- that introduces the town. But, as he did in The White Tiger, Adiga soon delves deeper to focus on class and caste inequalities and characters "paralyzed by their powerlessness" (Newsweek). His meticulous descriptions of men, women, and children from all walks of life offer insight into modern India, one where few such as these experience redemption. Some reviewers commented on the unevenness of the stories and the lack of overall plot, but all agreed on Adiga's important role as "a sensitive chronicler of modern India" (Telegraph).

Aravind Adiga is one of India's most refreshing contributions to the world of books in recent years. His first novel, a wildly original story of near-mythic proportions, "The White Tiger," won the UK's prestigious Man Booker Prize.

"Between the Assassinations" is a latticework of fourteen interrelated stories about the people of Kittur, a small town "on India's southwestern coast, between Goa and Calicut." The organizing principle of this book is the tourist guide, as each story begins with a walk through one of Kittur's distinctive neighborhoods, giving the reader a view of the town's humanity in all its extraordinary diversity. The stories in this collection are set in the tumultuous time in Indian history between the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 and that of her son, Rajiv, seven years later.

A casual visitor to India inevitably remarks on the abject poverty to be found among so many of that country's people. What remains invisible to the tourist comes to life in this remarkable collection of stories: the hopes, fears, doubts, and convictions of India's poor, and the survival strategies they forge in the midst of challenges the rest of us cannot conceive. As a portrait of caste and class and intercommunal (HinduMuslim) relations in modern India, this book truly excels.

An amazing look inside modern India

This series of short stories gives a gripping and unique look into life in modern India. The characters come at us from all parts of the society, and each one has an incredible story. Although these are short stories, they tie together smoothly and complete each other in their own way. Anyone who enjoys reading about India should not miss this book.

There are better books for less

I will start off by saying that I have more of an issue with my college course than I do with this textbook.
That being said, I am a student at GMU and I have to wonder why my professor chose this particular book.

1) It’s expensive. College Students are just a captive audience now-a-days. With Universities and Professors getting kickbacks, all the while preaching to their students about the school’s honor code. Hey Professors, there is no honor in the practice of picking substandard overpriced books and forcing them on your students. Nor is there any in writing your own books and pretending there are not better books out there priced considerably cheaper.

2) You don’t get the answers to the practice problems. Is this how people learn now, not being informed which problems they got right, or which problems they got wrong?
Just wondering how you learn like that.

3) This is minor but, the book focuses on using the Oracle SQL Developer tool, however we had to use sqlplus for all of our assignments. While the commands are the same, I would have rather used a book that focused on sqlplus. Or been allowed to actually use the Oracle SQL tool displayed in the book, again this is more of issue with my college course.

4) I felt the examples in the book were vague. And there was something about the flow in which the material was presented that I just found unappealing.

5) If you need this book for your college course like I did, consider just renting it, and use an additional book to actually learn the subject matter. I just found Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Feuerstein and Pribyl, just wished I’d gotten found it sooner. This book is nearly 3 times the size and less than half the price.

Another great, expensive book from Cen-gouge Publishing.

The examples in this book are great for someone who has been around the SQL block once or twice in a tricycle. If you understand basic SQL this text could teach you PL/SQL basics easily.. if you can afford it. Luckily for Cengauge I was in a class, so I didn't have a choice.

Meh...Could be better

I like a lot of the examples in the book, It is nice to see some example code from developer. But the descriptions of the code in the text can be cryptic at times, something I would describe as SQLese.
I wish the writing was focused more on understanding and less on trying to sound academic...but it gets the job done, I guess.

Less well known in the U.S. than his Sufi predecessor, Rumi, Hafiz (Shams-ud-din Muhammad) is also worthy of attention, and Ladinsky's free translations should help see that he gets it. Hafiz is so beloved in Iran that he outsells the Koran. Many know his verses by heart and recite them with gusto. And gusto is appropriate to this passionate, earthy poet who melds mind, spirit, and body in each of his usually brief pensees. Ladinsky has deliberately chosen a loose and colloquial tone for this collection, which might grate on the nerves of purists but makes Hafiz come vividly alive for the average reader. The Gift ($13.95 paperback original; Aug.; 326 pp.; 0-14-019581-5): A worthy companion volume to Coleman Bankss new translation of Rumi (The Glance, see below). It collects 250 poems written by Muhammad Hafiz (132089), the most popular and highly revered poet in Persian history, and renders them into a fresh translation from the Farsi. Like Rumi, Hafiz writes out of the Sufi tradition, and his work bears the Sufi hallmarks of ecstatic spirituality conveyed at once through lush imagery and verbal restraint. His fabulistic, almost didactic style can sound a bit flat at times (How / Do I / Listen to others? / As if everyone were my Master / Speaking to me / His / Last / Words), but there is a religious intensity in his work that is equally fresh and naive (When no one is looking and I want / To kiss / God / I just lift my own hand / To / My / Mouth) and quite unlike anything found in the Western tradition (though modern minimalists such as Robert Lax come close). There isn't a better gift in the world for morning reading - to help you get ready for a happy day full of surprises. It is hard to hold on to negative expectations when Hafiz is around. Daniel Ladinsky takes a leap as only a master of altered consciousness can and each poem is an experience of weightlessness. Give this book to someone trapped by the suffering of poverty, worry, or grief. Stand back and wait for it... 3... 2... 1... and then the dawn.

Beautiful poetry, amazing insights

Hafiz is the sort of genius you go back to repeated for guidance, for counsel, to regain your bearing.
Beautiful lines of poetry convey incredible wisdom and peace. I found him about a year ago and he was and is a long lost friend.

Absolutely beautiful poetic translation occasionally marred by silly attempts at contemporary relevance

Poetry is something I seldom read, but the range of philosophical and religious reflection in Hafiz' writing is amazing, delightful, and life-affirming. Not every poem is equally rewarding, but how could they be? The translations make these ancient short poems speak to the present day, but sometimes too much so--using terms that have only come into our language in the 20th or 21st centuries at times borders on "cutsie", which distracts from the true meaning. When Ladinsky sticks to standard and time-tested language and grammar, his translations have much deeper impact, for me anyway. I have not read other translations of Hafiz, but I imagine previous ones are full of "thee's" and "thou's", and less erudite perspectives. I highly recommend this book--for me is has more understanding and depth concerning daily living than Rumi, for instance. Just beware that there are some shockingly off-the-mark, if sincere, attempts to make this ancient poetry relevant to us now. Ladinsky apparently spent years working on this book, so my hat is off to his scholarship.
