A wonderful surprise!

I am a snotty English major with a few advanced degrees, hooked on science fiction and the headier type of literature. I needed an audible book for the car and grabbed this one because it was the first on the list. I could have driven across country without stopping. Fantastic characterization, intriguing plot, really a perfect summer read and the audible narrator is delightful. I have already purchased another book by Kerry Fisher for my next long car journey.

The Silent Wife is the story of two women who at the beginning are only connected by the men they have married. In time, they become friends and later on each other's support system.

The book begins with Maggie getting married to Nico Farinelli. She knows his mother Anna disapproves of her but she has fallen in love with him. After so many broken relationships, she has finally found a man she can count on and who thinks of her son Sam as family. Nico also has a daughter from his first marriage, Francesca. Maggie hopes to become a friend to her.

Lara is married to Massimo, Nico's brother and they have one child, Sandro. Lara's also the second wife. Massimo divorced Dawn when she refused to have children. Lara couldn't believe when Massimo started courting her and soon he makes her forget all her reservations but after the wedding everything changes.

There were so many things I like about the story. Lara and Maggie were both strong in their own way. They both had to deal with Nico and Massimo's mother Anna. She was not an easy person to like. She was always looking for ways to offend the "new wives". As the matriarch of the family, she made sure both sons lived in the same street as her. She even has a key to enter their homes uninvited.

Not only did Maggie have to deal with Anna but with her teenage step-daughter, Francesca who was trying very hard to make Maggie feel like an outsider. Lara's life was not any easier. Hers was a hotter hell.

These women were both so different but life brought them together. They both were dealing with secrets that could affect their whole family's dynamic. I rooted for both of them to make it.

The Silent Wife is a very entertaining tale full of emotion, heartache, complicated relationships, love and friendship. I would recommend it without reservation.

I really liked this book

I really liked this book. There are not enough books about family interpersonal relationships. It can be really tough. Especially if there is mental illness in the family. The dance to survive is difficult and suffocating. To protect your children and yourself can be an all consuming task. And Lara's doubt that she is sane or not is a real issue. My ex always made me feel as if I was the one who wasn't functioning well. And there was some truth to that. But so much was slight of hand on his part. Congenial with visitors or at a party, and horrid at home. Very few believed me. Even my parents. A quiet horrid death of sorts. Thank you for your book.

I actually bought this for my nephew and he just wrote me a thank you letter and said it's an excellent book. best of its time, the late 1970s

In the late 1970s when I was a graduate student at Stanford this was one of the best texts available on the theory of statistics at the first year graduate school level. It comes with a wealth of problems, many of which are very thought-provoking. There is a companion solutions manual that I recommend for students doing self-study. Cox and Hinkley are both excellent lecturers writers and brilliant statisticians.

This is still a very useful book although most of Bayesian inference including MCMC methodology and all of resampling theory is missing since the book was published in 1974.

I couldn't put it down! One of the most thrilling books available in maximum likelihood theory and methodology. While some examples are a little obtuse, on the whole Cox and Hinckley present the topic of the likelihood in a logical, coherent manner.

By far the best book on theoretical statistics

It is far from being the most technical one but definitely a book every statistician, applied or theoretical should read. It will help you appreciate the subject itself and think deeply about fundamental of this area. It is sad nowadays most people outside statistics, whenever in need to know more about statistics, just want to read a reciping-listing book on statistics and see whether they can immediately apply the method they find there. They don't seem to understand that there is not a cure-all method in statistics, but rather the truly universal theme in statistics is really about the fundamental ideas, which tend to be rather philosophical and sublte to digest (how frustrating this is for most statisticians, isn't it?)

This book is the perfect place to begin reading in one of the world's richest literary languages. The language is not so hard that you can't understand, but exactly challenging enough for me to learn loads of new vocab from every page while enjoying every word. About the Author

Born in Berlin in 1936, Harald Mante studied graphic design and painting at Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden. He taught Photographic Design at Dortmund Polytechnic and at the European Art Academy in Trier, as well as many seminars and workshops. Professor Mante has authored numerous art books and textbooks. His photographic work has been exhibited in museums and private collections world-wide, and his books and calendars have become collector's items.

Excellent, but...

Everything said in the other reviews is spot on. Though "Photograph" is the largest word on the cover, this book is about design. I'm very glad that I purchased it. To me, the "basics" (exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, etc.) that so many books focus on can be quickly figured out by spending a few minutes with google and shooting a couple rolls of film. If you're going to spend money on a book about photography, it makes sense to get a book that's filled with not-as-easily-found information. Especially when it presents it really well.

It contains tons of pictures and diagrams, and the text uses to them to explicate concepts of design. However, the editor failed to ensure that the diagram references in the text always match up with the correct diagram. For example, on page 18 the three diagrams are labelled G, H, and J. Then, on page 21, the author refers to diagram I (which doesn't exist), and clearly means to reference diagram J. This isn't all that big of a deal, but when you couple it with the fact that you're already having to often flip between pages to find which diagram is being referenced, it's pretty annoying whenever it happens.

I'd still recommend this book whole-heartedly, but I'd also recommend having a pen nearby to make the occasional correction. And while I'm recommending things, I'd also recommend the new Vampire Weekend album and Left Hand's Polestar Pilsner as being the perfect summer combination.

Harald Mante's Classic Book in a New Edition

This review covers just the new material in this second edition, which is the English translation of the German third edition. I commend the reader of this review to my detailed review of the first English edition (2007), elsewhere on amazon.com. The content of this new edition is identical to that of the first except for some new topics, some reorganization of the sixth section, and the addition of two new sections. I did not do the translation of the new material. "Identical" is not quite correct. From his first German edition to this one, the photos he uses to introduce each section change and are almost reason enough to own each edition. They are excellent and beautiful.

In the sixth section, "Using the Tools," Mante has inserted a chapter on visual aspects of the square format. From this same section, he has broken out the chapters on photographing sequences and series into their own two chapter section. Lastly he has added a new, eighth section on analyzing images to discern their elements, universal contrasts, and color contrasts.

This last section reminds me of the presentation in his Van Nostrand Reinhold books in English from the 1970s and is an important addition to the content of the 2007 edition. This new section should be several times longer, or given more chapters. It shows in schematic manner, using both a color and B&W rendering of each image along with small thumbnails, how a shooter or viewer can start training oneself to see the components of an image's, or potential image's visual structure. The thumbnails identifying the main color contrasts do not indicate where in the image such contrasts are, but they do encourage the viewer to search for them in the main image. The text for each image is in the manner of "formal criticism." This new section makes this book unique among all "composition" books currently or recently in print, and is a near culmination of why Mante's approach is so important, useful, and lacking in availability in the market. It gives the reader a model of how to begin to visualize images' architectures. The closest other such book is long out of print and deals with paintings and drawings.

This revision leaves a reader to surmise that somehow an image's success rests on the presence of several elements and contrasts spread throughout the frame, but the parameters of using those tools are not thoroughly spelled out. He doesn't go to the next logical place, and that is to take his approach to the elements, contrasts, and formal analysis to show the reader how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in an image's visual structure. The next edition needs to venture into this territory to be fully satisfying. The new last section on image analysis is the logical place for a new chapter on evaluating the strengths and weaknesses in an image's architecture: how well used and placed are the elements and contrasts for an image to be architecturally successful or need something in or out. There are hints at points throughout his text, but no unified, coherent argument in one place. That is the last step, missing from all current literature.

In terms of teaching design, what is missing in all extant literature on composition in photography comes under what used to be called "principles of design." Depending on the teacher the principles might be (Maitland Graves) harmony, gradation, contrast, unity, dominance, balance, repetition, and alternation, or in the case of the Davis/Sterling series, emphasis, contrast, pattern, balance and unity, movement and rhythm. There are other categorizations for the principles.

Too, I would recommend an expanded analysis chapter incorporating several more images; the ones in the chapter, while sophisticated enough in content and structure, leave one wishing for analyses of, say, the images he uses to introduce the sections, which are really good.

He can do this. It is a logical arena for the next edition. It may take him out of his comfort zone, but one legacy he could leave to all of his fans is a finished argument - and this reviewer counts himself as a fan since the mid-1970s. He hasn't done that yet in print - but neither has anyone else.

Even so, the merits of this book hold their own against any other out there. There is no other book that does the job of this book, and it remains one of the very few indispensable volumes in the library of any photographer who wishes to understand images beyond the intuitive, elementary level: that is, to learn to incorporate what is objective about images into one's way of seeing and creating them. Get this book, even if you have the earlier edition.

Apon a certain night - the date of which remains vague-Bram awakens, in a chamber, in a mansion, in the middle of the forest after 100 years. There to greet him is John Pride, a fourth generation lawyer from the firm of Pride, Conrad and Wilson. Unfortunately after all this time there is no longer any Conrads or Wilsons . Bram awakens with apparently little in the way on knowledge of his situation or memories of it. With what little the lawyer is able to impart and the small rectangular box given to him , he must sort out a life for himself. He does have the memory of a poem though, which goes something like.
"An ape, a boar, a stallion,
A land beyond the stars.
A virgin forest, a raging beast,
a prison without bars."

It is a great story rich in details , characters and imagination! One of his best works!

Wrong author, tedious quest tale

First, according to web pages listing his work, the correct author should be: Garrett, Randall & Lesser, Milton as Chase, Adam

E-novella downloaded free from Gutenberg. A being from another planet springs into life on Earth and seeks his destiny, while those who destroyed his nation on his planet worry about someone pursuing revenge.

I could not get into this story at all. I'm not a fan of quests or finding-out-who-you-are stories anyway, and this didn't seem like a particularly good example anyway; the writing and characters all seemed dreadfully self-conscious, and the back-and-forth between Earth and the other planet and characters felt disjointed. Garrett has written some excellent stories; read them and skip this one.

I originally read this book as a teenager shortly after it was first published. It was a fun read 50 years ago and it was a fun read now. This is definitely a teenager's book, but if you've got a few hours you'd like to pass enjoyably, this book will fill the bill.

YA A book that incorporates elements of both the horror tale and the action thriller, and the result is an intriguing and enjoyable novel. Watchers is a retelling of the Frankenstein theme with a twist: two creatures, quite different from each other, roam the land. Two animals who are unlike any other animals as a result of DNA research escape from a top-secret laboratory. One is divinely inspiring, engendering love and caring. The other is a hellish nightmare that leaves unspeakable slaughter in its wake. The two creatures and a supporting cast of charactersa government agent, a hired killer, a decent recluse, and a lonely womanare inevitably brought together in a climactic and satisfying showdown. While the plot developments occasionally seem a bit forcedthis is one book that could actually have profited by some extra lengththe shortcomings are minor. The Best You Can Get

This is the first novel I ever read written by Koontz, and to this day I must confess that it is still my favorite. Indeed, it may very well be my favorite book of all time.
The strength of the story, of course, lies with "Einstein", and his interaction with the other characters in the story. I'm not a dog lover by any stretch of the imagination, but I fell for this dog deeply. Koontz does a brilliant job of describing Einstein's feelings (read the book and this statment will make more sense, I assure you), so as you begin to view the dog as a human. It happens so gradually through the novel that you don't even realize it till it's too late.
The main theme of this book is LOYALTY. Not just with Einstein and the other characters, but more so with the humans he comes into contact with. I'm not sure if Koontz is a dog lover or not, but he sure made one out of me!
I have read this book more times than I care to mention, and each time I am still filled with the same emotions at the same incerpts on the same pages...This novel is indeed THAT powerful. Regardless of whether you enjoy pets or not, do yourself a favor, and read this novel.

Starts out great, but as character development progresses, the story loses credibility.

This books starts out great! The characters and plot are very interesting; however, the story while believable at first, ends up being pretty far-fetched, especially with some of the "dialog" from one particular character. The story would have been better if the author didn't go overboard in the development of one particular character. While the book is entertaining at first, I lost interest three-quarters of the way through it and had difficulty finishing it because the story became so unbelievable. This was the first Dean Koontz book I've read and may be my last, especially since he claims that it is his best work so far.

Spoiler alert! This book has made it to my top 10 most favorite books of all times. A genetically engineered golden retriever with the intelligence of a human being, who communicates with alphabet blocks or computer keyboard, what more do you need in a story? Oh, perhaps the fact that, this little pooch also acted as the matchmaker for the two main characters in this book. It broke my heart that he almost died with distemper and almost killed by the outsider at the end; but the story did have a happy ending.
