About the Author
SINGIRESU S. RAO, PhD, is a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. He earned his doctorate from Case Western Reserve University and has extensive teaching and research experience at Purdue, San Diego State University, Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur), and NASA Langley Research Center. Dr. Rao has published more than 125 technical papers in internationally reputed journals and more than 100 papers in conference proceedings in the areas of engineering optimization, reliability-based design, fuzzy systems, active control of structures, concurrent design, and vibration engineering. His previous books include Optimization: Theory and Applications, The Finite Element Method in Engineering, Mechanical Vibrations, and Reliability-Based Design. Dr. Rao has edited several conference proceedings and served as the Conference Chairman and Papers Review Chairman for the ASME Design Automation Committee and as an Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Mechanisms, Transmissions, and Automation in Design. Currently, he is on the editorial boards of Engineering Optimization, Reliability Engineering & System Safety, and Microelectronics and Reliability.

For a high level engineering textbook, I expected much better.

I am currently in my fourth year studying mechanical engineering and I have used a lot of text books. I am also working as a co-op with company that designs and builds clutches. It's important that I learn to analyze vibrations because vibration damping and tuning is one of the most important functions of a clutch.

That being said, I really want a quality vibrations textbook. This book is far from the quality I was looking for.

The worst part is that it's full of errors! I'm only in chapter two and I've already found multiple mistakes in the equations! That is simply not acceptable in a 6th edition, $260 engineering textbook! How can trust anything I read? What if I don't catch the mistake next time?

The rest of my complaints are somewhat trivial compared to the first, but are still very real complaints. Overall, I feel like the book was cheaply made. The pages are not nearly as vibrant as my other textbooks which makes it more difficult to read. Other textbooks use boxes or colors to help organize different sections of the chapter and highlight key points. This textbook looks like a novel with a lot of equations which makes it impossible quickly find key equations or even the point of the section without reading it beginning to end. I've seen worse textbooks, but they were $60 or $70. I paid $260 and it's the most expensive textbook I've purchased in my college career.

I enjoy reading textbooks, but reading a textbook is very different than reading a novel. You need to be able to quickly glance over a few pages and immediately understand what is going on before you even start reading the paragraphs. This textbook feels cheap, it's difficult to find important information, and there are unacceptable mistakes in the equations.

Pietro Bembo (1470-1547), scholar and critic, was one of the most admired Latinists of his day. Later he retired to Padua and a life of letters. He was made a cardinal in 1539. This verse edition is the first time they have been translated into English.

This volume also includes the prose dialogue Etna, an account of Bembo's ascent of Mt. Etna in Sicily during his student days, translated by Betty Radice.

A cleric, a Humanist, and erotic poet

It is always a treat to read treatises by clerics of the Middle Ages through the later Renaissance that enlarge upon the extent of the scientific understanding of their era. Bembo's ETNA gives us a clear exposition of how 16th century men viewed volcanology. It is also interesting to note how a cleric who is also a Humanist, reconciles his privates beliefs with the authorized doctrine of the Church. Bembo considered the membrane between classical mythology and the Christian religion to be readily and easily permeable. Hence his exquisite lyric eroticism.

His Faunus character was a creature after his own heart, a seeker after beauty, the unsatisfied voyeur, Faunus the lascivious lover of fleeing nymphs, witty, self-mocking, an earnest Casanova. His Faunus is one who knows the power a lovely woman can have over a man who understands the tender art of making love. I found his Faunus poems and PRIAPUS fine reading.

This offering from Harvard's I Tatti series presents us with a quite thorough biography of Bembo, and also takes us through his studies, and gives us a very good background on his fellow literary companions and friends. His life, in and out of the church, is indicative of so many of the other young men who fell back on the benefices of the church without a vocation, but simply to underwrite their lifestyle.

Kurd Laßwitz wurde in Breslau als Sohn von Karl Wilhelm Laßwitz geboren, einem Fabrikanten und Eisengroßhändler, der zeitweise Abgeordneter des Preußischen Abgeordnetenhauses war. In seinem Geburtsort sowie in Berlin besuchte er die Universität, studierte Mathematik und Physik, promovierte 1873 "magna cum laude" mit einer Arbeit "über Tropfen, welche an festen Körpern hängen und der Schwerkraft unterworfen sind" und legte im Folgejahr das Staatsexamen für den höheren Schuldienst in den Fächern Mathematik, Physik, Philosophie und Geographie ab.

1876 nahm er eine Stelle als Gymnasiallehrer am Ernestinum in Gotha an, wo er unter anderem Hans Dominik unterrichtete. 1884 erfolgte die laufbahn-übliche Ernennung zum Gymnasialprofessor und 1909 zum Hofrat. Letzteres verdankt er besonders seinem Wirken in der bildungsbürgerlichen "Mittwochsgesellschaft zu Gotha", die mit populären Vorträgen aus dem Bereich von Naturwissenschaft, Literatur und Philosophie zur Volksbildung beitrug. Die Mittwochsgesellschaft war 1884 gegründet worden, wesentlich initiiert von Laßwitz selbst.

Kurd Laßwitz starb im Alter von 62 Jahren in Gotha, wo er auf dem Hauptfriedhof in einem von der Stadt gepflegten Ehrengrab ruht.

About the Author
George F. Carrier (1918–2002) was one of the world’s preeminent applied mathematicians and the T. Jefferson Coolidge Professor of Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. He was honored for his scientific accomplishments by election to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He was the author of numerous papers and books. Max Krook (1913–1985) was Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Mathematics and Professor of Astrophysics at Harvard University. He was widely recognized for his work on stellar and interstellar atmospheres and for his explanations of unusual phenomena in fluids and plasmas. He also was renowned for the invention of several simple models that have given scientists new insights into kinetic theory and statistical mechanics. Carl E. Pearson has a wide variety of experience in both the academic and the professional worlds. He has taught at Harvard, the Technical University of Denmark, and the University of Washington, and he has spent years in industry as well, including work at Arthur D. Little Inc., Sperry Rand Company, and Boeing Aerospace Company. Dr. Pearson is the author of several books, some of them classics in the field of applied mathematics.

Readable

I'd never used this book tom teach complex variables in math methods in physics although I've
owned it for about 30 years. This time I made a lecture from it following the derivation of
the series solution of a linear differential equation for a regular singular point and found that
section to be very good. The book is readable from the start and is highly recommendable for
self-study.

nice contour integration chapter

As the other reviewers have said this book is readable. In fact I would say much more readable than Churchill and Brown (or Brown and Churchill depending upon which edition you have). I was amazed to find a chapter on asymptotics and special functions something I think is unusual in a beginning CV text. Carrier and Pearson's PDE book is also well written but unfortunately lacks references.

If you never seen a complex number before parts 2 and 3 of the 5 volume series by Knopp are an excellent starting point:Theory of Functions, Parts I and II (Dover Books on Mathematics) (Pts. 1 & 2)

Makes an otherwise complex subject seem simple by the way it is presented.I found it to be an exceptionally well written text, and would encourage anyone who is interested in the subject to buy it. A great book!

In the summer of 1745, Charles Edward Stuart, the grandson of England's King James II, landed on the western coast of Scotland intending to overthrow George II and restore the Stuart family to the throne. He gathered thousands of supporters, and the insurrection he led—the Jacobite Rising of 1745—was a crisis not only for Britain but for the entire British Empire. Rebellion and Savagery examines the 1745 rising and its aftermath on an imperial scale.

Charles Edward gained support from the clans of the Scottish Highlands, communities that had long been derided as primitive. In 1745 the Jacobite Highlanders were denigrated both as rebels and as savages, and this double stigma helped provoke and legitimate the violence of the government's anti-Jacobite campaigns. Though the colonies stayed relatively peaceful in 1745, the rising inspired fear of a global conspiracy among Jacobites and other suspect groups, including North America's purported savages.

The defeat of the rising transformed the leader of the army, the Duke of Cumberland, into a popular hero on both sides of the Atlantic. With unprecedented support for the maintenance of peacetime forces, Cumberland deployed new garrisons in the Scottish Highlands and also in the Mediterranean and North America. In all these places his troops were engaged in similar missions: demanding loyalty from all local inhabitants and advancing the cause of British civilization. The recent crisis gave a sense of urgency to their efforts. Confident that "a free people cannot oppress," the leaders of the army became Britain's most powerful and uncompromising imperialists.

Geoffrey Plank argues that the events of 1745 marked a turning point in the fortunes of the British Empire by creating a new political interest in favor of aggressive imperialism, and also by sparking discussion of how the British should promote market-based economic relations in order to integrate indigenous peoples within their empire. The spread of these new political ideas was facilitated by a large-scale migration of people involved in the rising from Britain to the colonies, beginning with hundreds of prisoners seized on the field of battle and continuing in subsequent years to include thousands of men, women and children. Some of the migrants were former Jacobites and others had stood against the insurrection. The event affected all the British domains.

Title and application are somewhat different

I had expected this discussion to assist me in linking those who settled in the colonies with the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Unfortunately this did not occur in the text. The discussion was devoted to the actual uprising with little further discussion of the refugees or the participants. My family members, the Townley's from Lancashire, were extremely active in the rebellion and in the prior challenges to the crown, but this text did not give me the details that I would have enjoyed having. The work is scholarly and expansive. A good reference for those who want to know more about this period in British history.

Good book that is based upon the Boudicca rebellion in Roman Britain

This historical novel is based upon the Boudicca rebellion in Roman Britain in 60AD. The focus of the novel is on Valerius, a Roman Tribune who has been given orders right before he is to leave for Rome (after his commitment to serve was supposed to be over) to defend a Roman colony (called Colonia but probably Roman Colchester) from the attack of Boudicca's rebellious horde of Celts.

What happens next is the stuff of legends: the stand of a group of Roman militia (ex legionnaires who are in the late forties and fifties and have businesses and families in town), the stand in a Roman temple (made mostly of marble), etc.

The brutality of warfare of the Roman period is highlighted almost to a fault espcially on the depredations that occurred to the Romans who were captured (won't go through that but want to alert the reader) providing gruesome details.

If you are interested in Roman history, this book is worth the read and the purchase. It provides details based upon the historical writings of Tacitus of this rebellion. It also provides a good reason for why the rebellion occurred (brutal Roman soldiers and administrators overreacting to their responsibilities).

The siege of Camulodunum brought to life

I'm an avid reader of all books Roman, action, mysteries, etc and I have to say this grabbed my attention from the start. The author managed to skillfully build characters and insert them into the beginnings of the Iceni rebellion. His take on this bit of history revolves around Tribune Valerius, whom finds himself wintering with a cohort from the XXth Legion at Camulodunum, known as The Colony due to the large number of retired legionaries who participated in the original invasion 16 years earlier. His involvement with the local populace and the consequences set the tone for the entire story. In some cases I found I could anticipate the direction the plot would take, especially with specific characters; however, this did not detract from the story. Having some background of the history of Roman Britain did have me wondering how the author would end the story and I have to say I was caught off guard. Admittedly the last crushing battle against the Iceni did seem rushed; but, if you consider Valerius's role in this compared to his other direct "in the front line" view, it makes sense it would come across this way. The price Valerius paid in the end for the title Hero of Rome, puts an interesting twist for the rest of the forthcoming trilogy and I'm VERY eager to see how the author pulls it off. A final comment about the characters, although exposure to some of the supporting characters were brief I have to admit I enjoyed the authors depiction of the veterans miltia of The Colony, especially Flavo and Corvinus. The ability to bring out what are ordinarily single dimensional types in an action novel speaks well for any author. Thanks and Have A Great Day!

Have been plowing through a lot of Roman historical fiction lately and loved Hero of Rome. While the battles were not as engaging and real for me as Jackson's "Claudius" was, the overall storyline was much more engaging. The way the author balanced the veteran legionnaires duties to their unity and to their families at Colonia felt very sincere to me causing them to be one of my favorite groups of characters. I can't say enough about this book and am looking forward to seeing how the author transforms what felt like a stand-alone novel into a series.

Lance Price is a political strategy consultant who worked at 10 Downing Street from 1998 to 2000, where he was a deputy to Alistair Campbell. He was the Labour Party's Director of Communications from 2000 until the General Election of 2001, when Tony Blair secured his second landslide. Before joining Number Ten he was a BBC Political Correspondent for many years. Price's account of his years with the Blair political machine were recounted in the UK bestseller The Spin Doctor. Price lives in London.

A good insight into Mr.Modi's hugely successful campaign

Just like many others, I was curious to understand how the hugely successfully campaign was carried out by Mr. Modi and the BJP for the 2014 general elections. This book definitely provides a lot of details, obtained from several quarters including party workers at different levels, organisers, ad agencies, TV, print and social media. However, the author was not able to meet with the master strategist Mr. Amith Shah for various reasons. Not that Mr. Shah would have provided much insight into his planning and execution, but we could have got his perspective.

While the entire book is narrated very well and kept me engaged for the most part, there is one incident where I believe the author could have looked elsewhere for information. This is regarding the 2002 Godhra roits. The author’s source of information are the NGO’s/human rights organizations. The issue here is, most of us know the NGO’s were merely there to promote the western interests by painting a negative picture of the Hindus and right wing organizations.

We have heard enough about Hillary Clinton’s “Get Modi” policy and the funding provided to several NGO’s , with the sole purpose of tarnishing Mr. Modi’s image and wrongly accusing him of state support to the riots. I believe the Nanavati commission report would have served as a more credible source.

That said, overall it is a well written book and will give you a lot of insights into the election campaign.

If you are from India and have followed much of the 2014 elections first hand, there is nothing much to read.
The only not so-much known things are how the back office team worked out the campaign.
The writer has unprecedented access to PMO but there is very little of what Mr Modi told the author.
Through this book Modi wanted "the world to know how we carried out election process for such big country".. Lofty statement - but what he actually said was "tell them how I won the election". Because this is not a book about election process and it is not written from the viewpoint of election commission nor does and nothing about how other parties fought the elections.
