Hidden In Plain Sight!

Much of what appears in this nifty book is not exactly hidden - a lot of it is in plain sight - IF you know where to look, OR what it is you are looking at! Perhaps not as useful to the tourist with one day in Venice before/after a cruise, but for those with a few days, a treasure map. (Of course, you need a good city map as well - Venice's curling little streets and alleys can have you lost in a heartbeat - but what a great place in which to be 'lost'!) Any road, this is an interpretive locating tool for the tourist who wants something extra to go with the golden interior of St. Mark's and the treasures of the Accademia.

Frank Sinatra has been a legend in many people's lifetimes. His long career saw success, followed by failure, followed by even greater triumph--and the longest sequence of post-retirement comebacks in twentieth-century show-business history. He is simply one of the most enduring performers of our era.

Michael Freedland's new biography gives a full portrait of the unorthodox singer's life, starting with his rough beginnings in the Italian quarter of Hoboken, New Jersey. Supported by his indomitable mother, Dolly, he battled toward a singing career despite any great evidence of talent.

Nevertheless, by the 1930s, a remarkable new popular singer had burst upon the ears of a generation of bobby-sox-wearing teenagers and created a new style of hero-worship. A unique voice and a unique style of phrasing gave Sinatra qualities to rival his idol and competitor, Bing Crosby. But unlike Crosby, Sinatra had an unerring eye for a good song, making his list of hits far longer, culminating, decades later, in the trademark, "My Way."

Sinatra's life was also studded with scandal and romance. He married four times and had many liaisons, too. And alongside the romantic history was the more boisterous one--drinking with members of the Rat Pack, brawls with journalists, and the association with the Mafia, often alleged but never proven.

This biography is a fitting tribute to a singer, actor, and hell-raiser, one of the legendary figures of entertainment, a man who, in every aspect of his personal and professional life, took it "All the Way."

Nothing new here, especially no focus on later life which was troubled with his last wife Barbara Marx who controlled him and alienated his children.

Pretty Awful

Though this book highlights some enlightening details about Frank Sinatra's life, much of it is shoddy hackwork. The reader learns the true story of how Sinatra freed himself from the talons of Tommy Dorsey. The reader learns of the strong influence of Sinatra's mother, Dolly, on his life. Dolly's own life as a Hoboken ward leader and her barely mentioned extraciricular activity as town abortionist fascinates. The friendship of Dolly and Ava Gardner, both foul-mouthed and proud of it, also fascinates. Ditto, the true story of how Sinatra resurrected his failing career by landing his role in "From Here to Eternity". Yet much is left out in this biography. The author seems to have gathered as much material as he could be bothered with and just slapped it together at breakneck speed in a book. It seems to be a specialty of Mr. Freedland's. More time is spent on Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio's "raid" on an apartment Marilyn Monroe was allegedly staying than Sinatra's relationships with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr.. The Rat Pack is glossed over; more time is spent on detailing Lauren Bacall's role in the original Bogart Rat Pack than in Martin and Davis's roles in the Rat Pack that most Americans are familiar with today. Much time is wasted on Sinatra's philosophical views on life, some of which seem to probably have been press releases written by his publicist. The author often doesn't put two and two together. Though Sinatra had great talent as an actor and played some fine roles, his career fizzled by the mid-sixties. Mr. Freedland mentions that Sinatra refused to do second takes but fails to understand that few directors would go out of their way to hire actors who refused to do second takes. Sinatra undercut his own film career. The bio is also very flighty. For instance, the author mentions a benefit concert Sinatra gave in New York which was attended by Jackie Kennedy Onassis at which she wore some sort of head band. Mr. Freedland informs us that the sort of head band used by Mrs. Onassis at the concert was sold out of New York stores within 24 hours as if that was pertinant information. The Jackie Onassis tidbit is indicative of Mr. Freedland's writing style. All in all, All the Way is useful in its way yet disappointing and borderline awful.

Luke warm review of Frank's life by a Brittish writer.

Michael Freedland's editor did not change the spelling or grammar for the American audience and I found it laborious to "read" around the frequent s for z swap. Our Americanized version of English probably puts the Britts off when we say "the band was" instead of "the band were." But frequent plurals where it would be more familiar in singular form were also a distraction. Mr. Freedland says in his forward that he collected notes over a period of years and then wrote the book. Sometimes it reads that way. Freedland bashes the early Sinatra years and makes Frank's mother seem very overbearing. Maybe she was but this autobiography is not very kind to either of his parents. Frank Sinatra's life was threaded with attacks from the press, some deserved, no doubt. Mr. Freedland seems to enjoy twisting Frank in the breeze and comes across as one of those media hacks who saw a chance to make a name by bad mouthing an enormous star. I was often bored! by the author's dry storytelling. As interesting a person Frank Sinatra was, it's incredible that an autobiography could be such a bowser.

An all-inclusive resource for crisis workers

As a former crisis intervention worker I am impressed with the all-inclusive nature of this book which covers crisis intervention across multiple populations and practice settings with sensitivity to cultural diversity. As a current social work faculty member teaching crisis intervention course content, I am impressed that Dr. Robert's book is grounded in clinical research with contributing authors who are the experts in this field. A must read for all crisis workers and an outstanding book to incorporate into the classroom. Very impressive!

Worth the money (opus number typos though)

This is a very expensive book, but I bought it (thanks to numerous gift cards for Christmas, hehe) and read it through. However, after reading it through, I went back and read about specific works to get a better understanding of them.

Furthermore, this is THE most scholarly source on Alkan I have ever read (and I an going to buy Ronald Smith's book next), and although it is very expensive, almost the entire book is available for "preview" (a.k.a. online reading) on Google books, and I recommend all Alkan lovers and music fans who have heard of this "mysterious" composer to read it.

If I could rate this higher than 5-stars, I would, because it is a truly amazing book about a sadly neglected but wonderful composer. The only problem is that there are some typos with opus numbers throughout the book, but if you know enough about Alkan's music already, you will quickly disregard them and know what is actually correct.

For anyone interested in advertising history, this is without any doubt the best textbook available. The history of advertising - a young and promising discipline - is covered from different perspectives and it's clear the authors are not biased. 'Social Communication' not only gives an overview of the most important writings on advertising history, but also shows possible directions for new research.

Interesting, informative, and accessible...

but what's with all the typos? There are numerous misspellings, misuses of homonyms, dropped letters and spaces, etc. And I don't mean a couple of them, either--there are sections that have an error every few pages--sometimes more than one on a page. For me, it's distracting. But if such things don't bother you--add another star to my four-star review, because otherwise, it's a great book.

Many of the tips are very unethical. Giving ratings for books and other items that you never read or bought hurts everyone who trusts the ratings. There is always a way to make an easy buck, just make sure that if you are lying to others by the ratings you are leaving that you enjoy being lied to as well.

I am familiar with Fiverr and its wonders. I can see people making it bigh there that sometimes I am also wondering how they do it. Good thing I came across this book.
