This Version is GARBAGE!

I have read the original version "Passages from the life of a Philospher" from Charles Babbage from the campus library, and I have to say THIS version is absolute GARBAGE! This paperbook version is a SCAN from the original using OCR software (which does a horrible attempt to translate it into text). The first page in the book has a warning to the reader that asks for forgiveness due to the vast number of typos in the book. Their excuse is "We would really like to manually proof read and correct the typos. But since many of our books only sell a couple of copies that could add hundreds of dollars to the cover price." This was followed by "The publisher and author make no repesentations or warranties with respect to the accuracy or completeness of this book" This would have been NICE to know BEFORE I bought the book, but the descriptions made no mention of the books faults. It's missing all of Babbage's equations and all his illustrations of his Difference Engine. I suprised this book doesn't violate some copyright laws. If you buy this book, be prepared to be hodwinked. I will NEVER buy anything from AMAZON again. As far as I'm concerned, this is down right FRAUD!

While the low prices and speed of delivery make the Kindle version of this old text intriguing, download a sample chapter before your purchase. This version lacks a table of contents and the scanning (?) process gave mixed results. Some pages are perfect and others (location 378 for example) are garbled.

Superior translation in all ways!

There are not too many good translations of Sophocles's other 4 miscellaneous plays. The 2 other main versions are by Lattimore, and by Watling.

I find the Lattimore too stiff and archaic, and the Watling stuffy and congested :(

This one translated by great stage director Peter Meineck (on the excellent Hackett label) re-defines the art of translation in this edition! He blows the many other translations out of the water by his lucid, powerful, believable and beautiful version. I love his lines, the words he chooses, and the way he puts them all together.

I actually can see it happening before me, whereas in other versions, it's more like history and a "good read".

Perfect for the acting student, stage director and lover of ancient wisdom!

Not As Bad As It Seems

You have to be willing to read and re-read these four plays to get a full understanding as to what going on in them. You also have to get the ORESTIA to get the back story of ELECTRA. Greek drama is not always an 'easy' read, but its definitelt a good read!!

ajax the beast

I was mistaken in ordering the English version without the original Greek text. However, reading the text in translation now, I could recommend it as reflective, sensible translation with a certain weight. But it is not my idea of "Ajax". Ajax is a mad, tragic cry for help. The main character is going through a war trauma. The beauty of some lines should be so painful, and not resembling a discussion or argument in court.
Great series of texts though.

This book is excellent. It contains all the aid I need for the course and even more. All the topics are well explained and contain more than enough practice problems. The book includes a cd with the digital book, which is great if you carry your laptop to school and you dont want to carry more books. The book includes complete chapters for TI procedures which are great if you are new to this type of calculators. This book is perfect for a math studies ib student.

Historical romance

Beautiful Christina MacCarthy, an Irish aristocrat and symbol of Irish freedom, is taken prisoner by the British. To regain her freedom she must marry a handsome, powerful English lord. She vows to retain her pride and hate yet gradually find herself in love. This novel is well written and enjoyable, with good descriptions of Ireland and the Irish political scene at the turn of the 18th century. The struggle for Catholic emancipation forms the novel's context, although the liklihood of an English Duke behaving as this hero does is slim. Nevertheless, it's a nice romance.

A Must -Read- Book by Joan Wolf

I hope Joan Wolf will reprint this book. One of her best writing. With her background in English and Comparative Literature , she did her homework well while writing this book. (The story of Ireland at the turn of 18th century. Its struggled to gain independence from England first by force then by election. The struggle for Catholic Emancipation so they can have their representative in the British parliament. You will love both hero and heroine. They were smart, strong, passionate and commited themselves for good causes. A must read. You can only find the book through used book stores. I ordered mine through Amazon for only $4. The book is priceless.

If you love Wolf's historic novels like the Road to Avalon, you will like this book (except this book has a much happy ending.)
I love most of Wolf historicals, (The Road to Avalon, Daughter of the Red Deer, The guardian etc.) Yet when she wrote contemporary novels, such as Summer Storm, Change of Heart,That Summer etc, I wonder, they were from the same writer. Please Mrs. Wolf, stick to your best skill. You are the queen of historical novels.

About the Author
Hima Reddy, CMT, was first introduced to technical analysis, and to the works of W.D. Gann, during her high school years by her father, who has had a passion for trading and the markets since the early 1980s. However, it wasn’t until after she completed an undergraduate Finance degree at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and returned to her home state of New York in 2001, that she immersed herself in the markets. She simultaneously volunteered as a sponsorship coordinator for several Market Technicians Association conferences, traded equity and commodity futures under the tutelage and guidance of her father, and completed the Chartered Market Technician certification. In 2006, she joined Informa Global Markets, an independent financial research firm providing live, 24-hour market analysis. As Senior Technical Analyst, she was responsible for producing timely and accurate short-term technical analysis and trading strategies for fixed income and FX markets. With analysis ranging through multiple timeframes, her team also prepared written updates covering longer-term trends. Hima’s “guru” has always been Gann—the first market analysis book she ever studied in-depth was How to Make Profits in Commodities—and to this day that is her go-to guide to the markets. Since 2011 she has returned to trading independently and continues to write about the financial markets. Her primary methods of technical analysis include pattern recognition and time duration relationships within markets based on Gann’s methodology, momentum assessment through the use of the Relative Strength Index (RSI), Fibonacci relationships, and moving average systems including the use of channels for trade management. Hima now resides with her husband in Baltimore, Maryland.

Elementary technical analysis concepts + common sense risk management rules

The title of my review sums up in a nutshell what you will learn from this book, which assumes that you have some familiarity -- if not real experience -- trading stocks and other assets and, therefore, know what market, limit, and stop-loss orders mean.

Technical analysis is based on the idea that when changes in the price of a tradeable asset takes the form of a recognizable pattern over time, a trader who knows what the familiar pattern might mean can use that information as a signal to "buy" or "sell" the asset in question. The patterns covered in this book are some of the simplest patterns that can be easily taught to beginning students of technical analysis, so readers who already have some exposure to technical analysis concepts may not gain much from this book.

The book also discusses several of W.D. Gann's trading rules for managing risks, which are common sense rules that, for example, ask a trader to own a diversified set of assets and not to risk more than a set percentage of his or her money on any single asset or market, etc.

The writing is fine, but the generous time and space given to really simple concepts could have been used to cover additional topics instead. Also, I didn't like that the originals for the figures in Chapter 7 were submitted in color but reproduced in grayscale in the book's print version, because references to elements in those figures by color (e.g., the green square, solid pink dashed line, etc) -- while the figures in front of the reader were really in grayscale -- made for a really unsatisfying reading experience. The author did provide a link to online color versions of the figures, but unfortunately, the link was a little bit off (you need to click on the "Download" tab, instead of the "Table of Contents" tab).

The Trading Methodologies Of W.D. Gann - Good Introduction, But Oversimplified and Incomplete

The Trading Methodologies of W.D. Gann: A Guide to Building Your Technical Analysis Toolbox is a good introduction to technical analysis in the Gann tradition. This book implies that it covers all of Gann's key methodologies, which it does not. It really should have been titled as an introduction.

The author describes Gann as esoteric. I think most of the intended audience could probably read the original Gann materials and understand them well enough. So this book's primary value is as an introduction for those totally unfamiliar with Gann or technical analysis. It also has the potential to provide a quick refresher for those, like me, who haven't read a book on technical analysis in a while.

Several technical analysis topics were simplified in a very coherent way, which I appreciated. But there were many topics that seemed to be over simplified. Other topics were simply not covered at all. While I generally do not like to levy this criticism, this level of content is definitely available with a few quick online searches. I do prefer the convenience of a book you can take with you. But there are cases where the author directs readers online to access color pictures of the figures that are grey-scale in the book! Figures 7.1 and 7.2 fit this description. So the more I think about it, the harder it is to see the value in a text that covers Gann in such an in-comprehensive way.

There was still plenty of superfluous information in this book. In Chapter 8, "Beyond Training Basics," the author advises readers that "Gann refers to the Bible many times throughout his works" and "it might be useful to have a copy of the Bible on hand to refer to." While Gann may quote the Bible and the Bible may contain tons of interesting and worthwhile information, the author fails to really explain why this information would help readers better understand Gann's trading methodologies.

CONCLUSION

This book has a worthy objective, and in part it does meet it. But many topics are over-simplified for the purposes of making them clear for novices. I am just not sure that the target audience for this book needs this much hand holding. More work should have been done to make the book self-contained, so that readers didn't have to refer to the web so much. They might find explanations of Gann online that rival the content provided here.

Awesome study book.

After taking a class requiring a book from this series, I was so impressed with the layout, and easy to follow format, that I purchased this book to study other programs from Adobe. This particular book came with a set of CD-ROM's which has all the files to work along as you read through the book. About the Author
JOSEPH BARUCH SHULAM (Chief Editor)

Joseph Shulam was born in Sofia, Bulgaria on March 24, 1946. His family immigrated to Israel in 1948, where they settled in Jerusalem. In 1962, he came to faith in Jesus the Messiah. He was educated at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he received a B.A. in Bible and Bible Archeology. He later came to the United States and studied at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received a B.A. in Chemistry and Biblical Studies. Upon completion of his B.A., he returned to Israel where he has since been involved in the local Messianic Jewish community. He continued his studies at the Hebrew University, and received an M.A. in the History of Jewish Thought in the Second Temple Period. From 1972–1975, he studied Rabbinics and Jewish Thought at the Diaspora Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Mr. Shulam is the Director of Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry in Jerusalem. Netivyah is an Israeli-government recognized organization, established by Mr. Shulam for the purposes of studying and teaching the Jewish background of the New Testament, providing a bridge between Jews and Christians and Judaism and Christianity, and nurturing the Messianic Jewish community in Israel. Mr. Shulam is also the Elder of Congregation Roeh Israel, also located in Jerusalem. In addition to Biblical Studies, he lectures worldwide on such subjects as the First Century Church in Jerusalem, the Jewish Roots of the New Testament, and Contemporary Middle East Politics. He was an adjunct professor at Abilene Christian University (ACU), and directed the ACU. graduate extension program in Jerusalem in 1988. Joseph Shulam is married to Marcia Saunders Shulam, and they have two children.

HILARY LE CORNU (Research)

Hilary Le Cornu was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1959. She graduated with honors from Edinburgh University in 1983 with an M.A. in Religious Studies. While pursuing her M.A., she received a certificate in Judaic Studies from the One Year Program at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where she is currently completing her Ph.D. in the Department of Comparative Religion. Miss Le Cornu has been residing in Jerusalem since 1983. In 1986, she began working as Joseph Shulam’s Research Assistant as part of the staff of Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry. She also participated in a four-member Interfaith Reconciliation Program to Rome and the U.S.A. in 1984. She served for a number of years as a volunteer coordinator for the Holocaust Education Seminar at Yad VaShem, and taught a course on Religious Pluralism for the Jerusalem Extension Program of Abilene University in 1988. She spent several years as Adminstrative Officer of the Messianic Midrasha in Israel, and is currently working as a freelance editor and proofreader.

An in-depth study by an honest man

Joseph Shulam is familiar with the traditions, practices, and history of his people - the Jews. Joseph Shulam is Jewish, but he is a Messianic Jew, which means he believes the Messiah has already come, and the Messiah is Jesus Christ. His life is an example of being on the front lines of faith, and he has been threatened, beaten, shunned, and hated because of his beiefs.
Shulam is a Biblical scholar, as well as an authority on Jewish customs and history. He brings a totally different point of view into this in-depth study of Romans because of his dual heritage.
Dedicated students of the Torah and the Bible will want to add this excellent book to their collection.

This is a wonderful commentary as it is presented by Joseph Shulam. He gives understanding to the difficult scriptures given to us by Paul that have not always been clear from many Christian scholars. I highly recommend this commentary to those who want a true understanding of the Book of Romans.

Some good insight

This book had some good insight, but I had also found a similar commentary online for free that was as good or better and quoted some from this book. It gleaned out most the relevant stuff. Too much of the book was about the Qumran community. I expected more to be from more recognized and reputable sources such as the Old Testament, Talmud, Midrash, Josephus, etc.

Strongly Recommended

This book provides a solid foundation for the practicing engineer involved with the econmic evaluation of engineering projects, an area which determines for the greater part, whether projects should be progressed or aborted. The principles are well defined and the examples are easy to follow, rightfully stimulating thinking and not substituting for it, since as we are well aware, engineering projects may vary in size, scope and complexity. I would recommend this book to any engineering student or practicing engineer. Consulting the work of other authors (eg Sullivan) would supplement understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the errors within the examples provided. The principles however, are conveyed so effectively in the text that identification of these errors become easy.

Very Good.

This is an excellent text for an engineering economics class. It concisely explains and demonstrates basic ideas and financial concepts in a logical manner. The only draw back I could detect was the author's nomemclature, which he introduces at the first of the text. If you don't memorize it early on, it becomes difficult to understand quickly. The professor who taught the Engineering Economics class I took was none other than Chan Park himself (guess what the required text was!).

A decent enough textbook to get by with. Some examples are unnecessarily complex, but for the most part it does a good job of explaining everything. Overall, though, if you're an engineer the subject of introductory economics is so easy it doesn't really matter how good your textbook is.

IM Lakdawala has out-done himself this time. I play the Bird's Opening myself, and I was always irritated by the lack of material put out on the subject. I own both of IM Timothy Taylor's book on the Bird's, and I also own Henrik Danielsen's ebook aswell, and I can easily say this is the most comprehensive book on the market.

I struggled with a few variation of the Bird's and tried to make several of the variations work, reasonably, and I came up with few ideas that seem to make the Classical Bird's opening viable for play. While IM Taylor's book seems to touch on the classical variation just for the sake of taking up space, IM Lakdawala puts down very strong ideas that bring up the classical variation's reputation.

As always, IM Lakdawala entertains with his trademark colorful style, and makes evaluations and variation easy to digest.

My personal way of playing the Bird's has changed, and I am seeing results in both online play, and in over-the-board tournament settings. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to learn the Bird's pick this book over the others.

The Bird -- an old chess opening made new!

Lakdawala's most recent contribution to Everyman's Move by Move series resurrects Bird's opening, which has been unjustly neglected for decades. The Bird is a Dutch reversed, so if you want to employ both openings in your repertoire you'll find this particularly helpful. I've been through Cyrus' book twice now, and yesterday I won one game and drew another, both against rated opponents (my own rating is around 1750).

The analysis is thorough and up to date, meticulously checked by the comps. Unlike the other reviewer who commented here, I don't mind the author's writing style -- it enlivens what otherwise could be the tedious work of labouring through intricate moves and diagrams, and even serves for me as a kind of mnemonic that highlights key moments in the game being presented. If a chessbook can be novelistic, why not?

The slightly earlier Tim Taylor book on the Bird, and Henrik Danielsen's very recent online collection of games via Kindle, serve as counterpoint to Lakdawala's book. All three players/authors have a slightly different take on the Bird, so I find that the three complement one another nicely. If you don't like one approach to a particular line of the Bird, you can try another!

Did I just buy a novel or a chessbook?!?

While books on the Bird is rare, when there is one, I snatch right away. The content is good BUT for the life of me please don't make a chess book into a literary pulitzer prize wannabe novel... I'll quote a few examples: "... Black’s e-pawn insolently looks in our direction and makes a neck-slicing gesture by dragging a finger across its throat.", "... with free associative interpretations.", "The bishop, unsatisfied with mere reverence from his followers, now demands outright worship from his g7-brother. The hermetic seal of Black’s defence finally opens a crack, just enough to allow infiltration.", "Sherlock Holmes said that in life-threatening emergencies, we tend to “save the object dearest to our hearts.” In the case of the black king, the “dearest” object happens to be himself. He has little choice but to forgive his h6-sister her trespasses - mainly since she has the power to arbitrarily order his immediate execution if the mood comes upon her.", "Black’s king reminds us of a psychologically tormented victim in an Edgar Allan Poe story.", "“So now you recognize - much too late - the degree to which my power overwhelms yours,” the queen tells her unfortunate b6-rival." and so on and on and on... This book could have been made more concise and clear without the need for metaphors nor literary references. I could see some foreigners buying this book become confused with the colorful comments. I particularly do not like it.
