In middle school I saw a parade and was captivated by a jazzy tune some trumpet players were jamming out. After that I just had to become one myself. I made a pretty good run of it by taking some lessons and ended up playing trumpet in my high school marching band for four years. Being a trumpet player even helped me land my first girlfriend. No, I didn’t use it as a blunt weapon, she was a saxophone and our sections sat next to each other. Alas, all that is over a decade behind me and that trumpet now resides in the land of the lost called my attic. I haven’t touched it in years and couldn’t do much more than fumble through a scale now.
The moral of the story is this book is only going to give you basic facts and advice about hacking. How you use the information… if you use it at all and how far you go with it are left up to your own discretion, effort, ability and drive.

Full of errors, misspellings

Not worth the 2.99 I paid. Terribly written with tons of misspelled words and odd sentence syntax that made it hard to read. Sections of the "book" read like an advertisement for software.

The book has less valuable information on hacking than the Wikipedia article on the same topic. "Hacking" in this book simply refers to downloading and using software from the Internet.

Really disappointed.

This book is a great start for a greener pasture in the world of internet. Hacking is my very favorite thing to do however I'm not like black hat hackers rather white hat one. This is an easy to understand book about hacking and the backgrounds of the types of hackers. A book that stirs your heart to becoming one, either good or bad hacker. It only matters on your choice.

Good practical book.

Depending on the reader, this book may revamp your life or it may just provide some guidelines and things to do to enhance the good life you are already living. Sometimes, small changes are all you need for a direction correction, to break bad habits or to set new goals. The author provides helpful suggestions, stories and tips that are encouraging and inspiring. She includes exercises, video links and surveys to explore interests, needs and desires in several key areas. While this book is a good starting point and may serve as a catalyst for change in simple areas, additional professional help may be required to further address depression and more in depth tests for education and vocational counseling.

Christian Teachers in Public Schools UNITE!

This book is a must read for any teacher who teaches in the public school and wants to "hang on" to their Christian values. In ways that only God can show you, you will be able to convey that love of Christ to the hundreds of children who come your way. No words.....just the love!
It encouraged me and assured me that there is great satisfaction in reaching out with the hands of Jesus.

I originally bought this book for a class, but I know now that I would not be able to start a teaching career with out it. It will be useful to me as a teacher, or as a parent to children in the public system.

Howie also suspects his principal of being a Nazi spy, and follows him into a brownstone one morning where he overhears plans to fire his beloved teacher, Miss Rolanda Gossim (he thinks of her at night when fear overtakes him: "She was my emergency brake, my life raft, my parachute, my own private rescue squad"). How he "saves" Miss Gossim makes for a smashing story enlivened by the added emotional texture of a boy dealing with wartime realities (particularly the death of his "bestest" friend Denny's father) and romance (Miss Gossim is actually married to a missing airman and pregnant). Howie's voice, firmly rooted in Brooklyn ("You'd feel worse than a Giants fan in Ebbets Field," he says of disappointing Miss Gossim), takes on the inflections and slang of the era. The novel ends on an upbeat note, with 16-year-old Howie celebrating the end of the war and still carrying a torch for Miss Gossim. Ages 8-12.

Gr 4-6-Howard Bellington Crispers looks back from his 16-year-old perspective to 1943 when he grappled with issues of friendship, fear, love, and loss. At age 11, Howie and his friend Denny share a crush on their teacher and they suspect their principal is a Nazi spy. However, in a sleuthing expedition, Howie learns that the principal's real perfidy hits closer to home-he is urging the firing of Miss Gossim. Howie visits his teacher and she tells him the reason for her pending dismissal-she is secretly married to an army pilot and is pregnant. Taking up her cause and disregarding his promise to keep her secret, Howie circulates a petition to stop the firing, embarrassing the young woman but securing her a reprieve until the end of the school year. Avi packs the story with authentic details of World War II in Brooklyn, NY, augmented by newspaper headlines. He peppers it with funny scenes, lots of slang dialogue between the boys, and a keen sensitivity to the adolescent psyche. Layered into the plot is the drama of the boys' absent fathers. Howie's returns but Denny's is killed, and the bittersweet ending reflects the protagonist's regret over losing Denny's friendship when his own family moves to Long Island. Though lacking in originality, this quick-moving, easily read story will be enjoyed by many readers. A more serious, complex, and in-depth treatment of a similar theme can be found in Janet Taylor Lisle's beautifully wrought The Art of Keeping Cool (Atheneum, 2000).

The war at home is both setting and story in this affectionate comedy told in the immediate voice of Howie Crispers, who looks back a few years to 1943 when he was 11 and living in Brooklyn, New York. Howie has a crush on his wonderful teacher, Miss Gossim, and he's horrified to discover, while spying on the hateful school principal, that Miss Gossim is to be fired. Howie and his best friend have always imagined that the principal was a Nazi spy, but they don't know why Miss Gossim has to go. The spying and the secrets add to the fun, but this is mostly a story about the daily life of kids on the home front. Every chapter begins with a page of dramatic newspaper headlines about the war, which provide context for Howie's worries about his dad fighting in Europe; Howie knows families who have lost loved ones. The times described are hard, but Avi keeps the storytelling light, with fast dialogue and lots of lively detail about a time when grown-ups went away and "it was kids who had the job of trying to keep things normal. Know what I'm saying?" Like Avi's Who Was That Masked Man, Anyway? (1992), this is not so much about war as about ordinary life. Hazel Rochman

Howie Crispers; Good Person

Howard "Howie" Crispers is a sixteen year-old boy from Brooklyn. He tells the story of what happened to him over the course of a week in March of 1943. This is the year Howie was in the fifth grade. He sneaks into the superintendent's home only to hear that his teacher Miss Gossim is going to be fired. Howie is suspicious of the reason behind the decision of the principal of the school(Dr. Lomister) and the superintendent. Howie doesn't haave time to hear why she is being fired because he is already late for school. The only thing he can think of is that Lomister wants Miss Gossim to marry him and she won't. Howie learns better of this though, when he goes to Miss Gossim's house. He goes to he house during an air raid drill and talk to her about what is happening about her being fired. She explains that she is pregnant and that teachers cannot teach and be pregnant. When Howie is about to leave Miss Gossim asks him not to tell anyone about her. Howie agrees but he still wants to help her. He is later reading in a book about petitions and he thinks it would be a good idea to start a petition against Miss Gossim leaving. The next day at school Howie and his best friend Denny get almost everyone in their class to sign but they get caught by Miss Gossim. She is very dissappointed in Howie and she tells him how upset she is with him that he revealed her secrets even though he was trying to help. When Howie goes home he tells his little sister what happened and she says he should bring the petition to the superintendent's home after the Saturday kids movie. He takes his little sister's advice and gets some of his classmated to go to her house after the movie. When they go to her house she says that she will see what she can do about Miss Gossim staying. Howie has mixed feelings about what he has just done. He is happy that Miss Gossim might stay but he doesn't know if he has gone to far and that this action will just upset Miss Gosssim even more. Either way Howie is anxious to see what will happen on Monday. Miss Gossim said that all she wanted Howie to do for her was to pass a Monday math test. I think that Avi did a pretty good job with this book as he does with all his books. I would encourage anyone who is interested in action/WWII stories to read this book.

Howie Crispers; Good Person

Howard "Howie" Crispers is a sixteen year-old boy from Brooklyn. He tells the story of what happened to him over the course of a week in March of 1943. This is the year Howie was in the fifth grade. He sneaks into the superintendent's home only to hear that his teacher Miss Gossim is going to be fired. Howie is suspicious of the reason behind the decision of the principal of the school(Dr. Lomister) and the superintendent. Howie doesn't haave time to hear why she is being fired because he is already late for school. The only thing he can think of is that Lomister wants Miss Gossim to marry him and she won't. Howie learns better of this though, when he goes to Miss Gossim's house. He goes to he house during an air raid drill and talk to her about what is happening about her being fired. She explains that she is pregnant and that teachers cannot teach and be pregnant. When Howie is about to leave Miss Gossim asks him not to tell anyone about her. Howie agrees but he still wants to help her. He is later reading in a book about petitions and he thinks it would be a good idea to start a petition against Miss Gossim leaving. The next day at school Howie and his best friend Denny get almost everyone in their class to sign but they get caught by Miss Gossim. She is very dissappointed in Howie and she tells him how upset she is with him that he revealed her secrets even though he was trying to help. When Howie goes home he tells his little sister what happened and she says he should bring the petition to the superintendent's home after the Saturday kids movie. He takes his little sister's advice and gets some of his classmated to go to her house after the movie. When they go to her house she says that she will see what she can do about Miss Gossim staying. Howie has mixed feelings about what he has just done. He is happy that Miss Gossim might stay but he doesn't know if he has gone to far and that this action will just upset Miss Gosssim even more. Either way Howie is anxious to see what will happen on Monday. Miss Gossim said that all she wanted Howie to do for her was to pass a Monday math test. If I could rate this book from 1-5, I would rate it a 5. I would rate it this because; it's a good book. It has a lot of voice, dialog, and you can get some good pictures in your mind of what's happening. In addition, there are some exciting parts as well.
This book is about a boy named Howie Crispers. His teacher named Miss Gossim. One day Howie was walking to school when he saw his principal, so he followed him to his superintendent's house. Howie over heard that Miss Gossim was going to be fired. Before he could leave the house, he ends up stumbling in a coal pit. He then tells his best friend Denny Coelman of what's going on. One day after school Howie got home when the bomb shelter siren went off. His sister was out there all alone and she hates being alone. So he runs to her and gets her home but before he could go, this security guard told him to do a favor. To go tell his boss that sector 5 is all cleared. Howie then grabs the flashlight and runs to his boss. As soon as he gets there and tells the guards boss some mean fat guard tells him to get shelter or he will be in some major trouble. Then he ends up having to stay at Miss Gossim's apartment. So he asks her room number and goes there. She was oddly surprised to se him. She takes him in and they talk about why she is being fired and about her husband Smitty who was lost at war. The reason she was being is that she is expecting a baby! Howie was surprised and had to think of some way so that she can stay teaching. Soon after they can't think of a way and she is fired. Howie will never forget her.
I would recommend this book to 6-7 graders because it has very short chapters and big writing. Although it has 200 pages, it's still easy to read. It's a great book and I liked it.
