This book is for a college psych. class of mine called "Mental Health". The book is a wealth of information about different stages in life and all main issues a person deals with over time. (i.e. Love, Relationships, General Wellness, etc) Outside of a classroom environment, the book would still work. It is a fairly easy read and if one was to work through all of the personal reflection questions in the book, they could probably get to really know them self better and solve a few problems along the way.

This is a great book for someone trying to "find" themselves. It helps you reach inside of yourself to find the answers for questions that you have, but you don't want to ask anyone else because you're embarassed. It'll be a great book to read after five years and see how you have changed and grown. I'd suggest keeping a notebook to record your responses to the questions asked in the book and compare the answers after re-reading it a couple years later.

Review

Publishers Weekly -
With an endearing mix of down-to-earth practical solutions and funky DIY projects, this book provides readers with much-needed information on how to renovate habits and home to move closer to a zero-carbon existence. The Hrens, respectively a carpenter and a photovoltaic installer living in Durham, N.C., give specific and technical advice, based on their own experience, on how to lower energy use within and outside the house, with 36 projects ranging from simple and inexpensive activities like sealing drafts, resetting the water heater thermostat and planting potatoes in a barrel to more heavy-duty and costly tasks such as installing a green roof or a solar hot-water heater and replacing a lawn with a permaculture garden. Some projects, such as building an outdoor cob oven--which the authors themselves describe as time-consuming with low energy savings--will be of little interest to any but devoted backyard hobbyists. Converting from a flush toilet to humanure, which involves lugging five-gallon buckets of human waste to a compost pile on a weekly basis, is even less likely to be adopted by the urban dwellers the Hrens hope to influence. But just about anyone will find something useful to do in this book, and the detailed, clear and enlightening chapter on understanding home energy use is, alone, almost worth the purchase price.

"It's hard to imagine a more comprehensive, and comprehensible, guide to making your home work for you and for the planet, inside and out. It's frugal, it's sensible, and it will help!"--Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy and Fight Global Warming Now

"The Carbon-Free Home is a wonderfully useful guide to reducing household reliance on fossil fuels. Most of us have very little idea how many hydrocarbons we're using--until we do a personal inventory. The harsh reality is that we have all become complicit in an energy system whose future is bleak and unsustainable. It's time to bail out, and this book tells us how."--Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow at the Post Carbon Institute and author of The Party's Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies

"It is now evident that we have come to the end of the first half of the Age of Oil, when the production of oil-based energy fueled an expanding economy in which consumers were encouraged to feed their appetites. In energy terms, current oil production is equivalent to 22 billion slaves working night and day, but it is a finite resource formed in the geological past and therefore subject to depletion. As every beer-drinker knows, the glass starts full and ends empty. The quicker he drinks it, the sooner it is gone. It is the same with oil. The second half of the Age of Oil, which now dawns, will be very different. The economy will have to contract in parallel with oil supply, and people will have to turn to new and more sustainable life-styles. This book is essential reading, giving a full spectrum of invaluable advice on how to adapt to the new conditions imposed by Nature. It is far from a doomsday message as it offers hope for a new, more benign age. The transition will be tough but this book explains how to plan and prepare."--Colin J. Campbell, Chairman of ASPO (Association for the Study of Peak Oil)

"While not for the timid or tool-phobic, The Carbon-Free Home is a gold mine of inspiration and information for those hands-on people with more time and energy than money, and a passion to help save the planet."--Beth Sachs, Executive Director of Vermont Energy Investment Corporation

"This is the perfect book for people who want to roll up their sleeves to save the planet. It is informative, well researched, easy to follow, and inspiring. Our future depends on each of us reducing our carbon footprint. The Carbon-Free Home is a great resource to assist in this adventure of our time."--David Gershon, author of Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program to Lose 5,000 Pounds and Green Living Handbook: A 6 Step Program to Create an Environmentally Sustainable Lifestyle

"This is an excellent resource for people committed to reducing their energy consumption and carbon emissions."--Joe Loper, Vice President for Policy and Research, Alliance to Save Energy

"We all know in our hearts, but shun the thought, that one day we must kick the fossil fuel habit. Stephen and Rebekah Hren have grasped the nettle and implemented simple and ingenious do-it-yourself technologies to achieve the goal of zero-carbon living. Their book offers a rich selection of options for all who desire to reduce their carbon footprint."--John Terborgh, Director of the Duke University Center for Tropical Conservation and author of Requiem for Nature

"If you want clean fingernails along with a clean conscience, then I can't recommend this book. If you believe that industrial capitalism is systematically silencing the divine voices of the biosphere, and you feel responsible enough to do something, then read it and heed it. We can't pontificate our way out of the awful mess we have, and we can't whine our way out either. We have to design our way out, and The Carbon-Free Home explains in plain language how to start designing-out in our own crawlspaces and attics. The measures we take now for our individual independence will soon enough be required for our collective survival. Stephen and Rebekah Hren have provided a practical education for tomorrow's most essential revolutionary cadres."--Stan Goff, author of Hideous Dream and Full Spectrum Disorder

"The Carbon-Free Home confronts the hard truth about reducing our carbon impact on the world. The Hrens share their broad experience to give us all the head start we need to move towards a sustainable lifestyle. If you're willing to do the work, this book will inspire you to squeeze every molecule out of your carbon budget."--Paul Scheckel, author of The Home Energy Diet

"The Hren's book provides an meaningful pathway to a carbon-free lifestyle--including everything from the latest in high-tech equipment to homemade solutions that will satisfy the earthiest of back-to-landers."--Michael Welch, Redwood Alliance

"Stephen and Rebekah's The Carbon-Free Home is a remarkable book. It's thorough, well researched, and a delight to read. Its many practical solutions offer hope for individual action in the face of daunting environmental crisis. Reading it made me want to go home and get started on projects for our house."--Lyle Estill, author of Small is Possible: Life in a Local Economy

Interesting, could use some tweaking
By omnivorous Reader 42
I came to this book from an article in Ode Magazine and the article showed that the authors have great personalities, but that does not come through in the book for me.

If you, like my family, don't want to live out in the middle of nowhere, this is a great book for "greening" an existing home.

Definitely goes beyond "buy different light bulbs" and that is refreshing.

Finally, some expert renewable energy authors in the Southeast!
By A. Wilson
I have an extensive collection of books written about renewable energy and natural building and was getting desperate to find some experts that lived in the part of the country and in the same climate as me and I finally found them!
The book is a terrific source of new ideas and source references. Definitely a good buy, especially for those of us who don't happen to live on the West Coast but still want to be really green!

Packed with tips and practical retrofit ideas
By Midwest Book Review
The authors weaned their lives of fossil fuels in their standard 1930s urban house - and they then tell consumers how to retrofit existing homes to do the same, obtaining all power and heating and cooling from renewable sources. From cooking with biogas to using earth plaster to increase the biomass of a house, THE CARBON-FREE HOME is packed with tips and practical retrofit ideas, making it a fine acquisition for any homeowner's library and for general-interest lending collections.

—Puedo preguntar adnde vas?

All you need to know about steroids as a bodybuilder. This book covers almost all steroids on the market in simple terms. Do not expect medical detailed references in this book. It is not for medical students. It is rather a collection of information found all around the world and relayed in a very simple language without littering the book with cross references. This book is more like gossip amongst steroid bodybuilders in a changing room.

An insightful and detailed guide on the use of steroids and anabolics
By E.A. Gray
[[VIDEOID:6ca1aab158f491bba76d018aeb2f481c]] As an avid pursuer of proper aesthetic results and a more capable physical ability, I purchased this book in the hopes that it could illuminate me on the varying aspects of steroids and their impact on my body's growth. From the beginning it was obvious that the author was an authority on the subject; his descriptions are well described and without complications or fluff. I thoroughly enjoyed the introductory writing and found the information on the negative feedback loop and side effect descriptions very enlightening. Also, the information on injections and syringes was indispensable. Just reading those first few pages provided me elucidating information that has increased my knowledge on steroids exponentially.

From there, the author breaks down the different types of steroids, hormones, and anabolics that are readily on the market. He succinctly describes the benefits, details, and possible downsides of each option in a way that provided me the exacting clarity that I needed in order to choose which product was best for me. The additional info on anti-estrogen items that are to be used was worth the price of the book alone: They let me know what I needed to utilize in tandem with my chosen steroid. From HCG and D-Bol all the way to insulin and the best products necessary for cutting weight, there is nothing left out of this all-inclusive guide. If you're looking to be fully informed about steroids and all the other products that coincide with it, you can't do better than this. I've no doubt that it is going to remain a reference in my personal library for a very long time to come.

Dollar per dollar
By Taraa Gaspar
Dollar per dollar, there is no better way to acquire all the vital information needed to use steroids safely and effectively. This book answers all the questions. It comprehensively covers all. It is a thorough reference guide. It was a brilliant idea to keep the book short, nice and simple. My advice to steroid users and the just curious is you will not find a cheaper and more comprehensive book on steroids. I wasted lots of money buying bad books but this one is great.

This book is very direct
By Patricia Cook
This book is very direct. Before I even got into the steroids reference part I learnt all about the whole theory and practice of steroids, for instance anabolic and androgenic effects, alcohol and steroids, negative feedback loop (particularly useful), estrogen levels, water retention, sexual overstimulation, intramuscular and intravenous, how to measure or dose, where to get your syringes, how to inject, and which ones are better.
Then you get 27 detailed steroids and bodybuilding drugs described in a very efficient manner:
- Positive effects,
- How it works,
- Pros and cons,
- How to take it,
- What dosage,
- What frequency.

An American Jew: A Writer Confronts His Own Exile and Identity, by Steven Pressfield

"Deeply personal and profoundly moving...An American Jew has filled me with the love and pride for my brothers and sisters, the Children of Israel."-- Randall Wallace, author of BRAVEHEART and director of HEAVEN IS FOR REALSteven Pressfield grew up assuming he was like every other kid in his red-white-and-blue, Sunday-School attending, Christmas-tree decorating suburb. Then at age thirteen he found out he was in fact not a member of that tribe, but of a very different one. Five decades later, in November 2011, Pressfield boarded an El Al jet bound for Israel. At long last, he'd committed to researching and writing THE LION'S GATE, a book that would finally wrestle with the riddle of his own identity. What he learned as an artist and a man in the three years it took to complete the work is the subject of AN AMERICAN JEW, an on-the-front-lines account of the creative process...in all its wonderfully confounding forms.

Who is Steven Pressfield?
By J. R. Yaeger
Pressfield seamlessly merges three disparate stories into this quick read. First, he tells the writer’s two-year journey as he initially ponders, then researches, outlines, writes, and rewrites his book, The Lion’s Gate, about the 1967 Six-Day War: how he rushes to tell a truthful account before the aging participants in the war are no longer available, and how he worries about representing the late, iconic Moshe Dayan’s conflict over the capture of Jerusalem. Second is a Reader’s-Digest version of the war highlights as told by those he interviewed. Third, and most important, is the struggle to understand his Jewish heritage kept from him until age thirteen: how it inspired The Lion’s Gate, how it lured him to Israel for the first time, and how it pulled him to the land and the people of his ancestors. When you finish, you’ll know who Steven Pressfield is.

Who Am I? The Answer.
By michael matthews
A very interesting book. Especially for those who have read The Lion's Gate, Pressfield's amazing time machine which puts the reader squarely in the middle of Israel's Six Day War of 1967. It's not required reading in order to enjoy this book, but it's such a huge and well-told story it perhaps should come first. The writer's personal journey, told here, is fascinating on its own. You don't have to be Jewish or a fan of military history -- I'm neither -- to be carried along with the author as he confronts his own identity and what it means. His insights into the many threads which form the tapestry of turmoil in the Middle East are enlightening and ring true. The story leads to a personal decision, one which the reader is hungry for by the book's conclusion.

Atheist Approved!
By Randy Gage
What a sensational book! This is a very strange book for me to read, because after 20 years of being a lay minister at a Unity church, studying the major religions and then a 2-year sabbatical, I came to the conclusion that no rational person could believe in God. But even as an atheist, this story was touching and compelling. And anyone of any belief who appreciates simply brilliant writing will adore this book. -RG

The Nest, by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives.

Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems.

Melody, a wife and mother in an upscale suburb, has an unwieldy mortgage and looming college tuition for her twin teenage daughters. Jack, an antiques dealer, has secretly borrowed against the beach cottage he shares with his husband, Walker, to keep his store open. And Bea, a once-promising short-story writer, just can’t seem to finish her overdue novel. Can Leo rescue his siblings and, by extension, the people they love? Or will everyone need to reimagine the futures they’ve envisioned? Brought together as never before, Leo, Melody, Jack, and Beatrice must grapple with old resentments, present-day truths, and the significant emotional and financial toll of the accident, as well as finally acknowledge the choices they have made in their own lives.

This is a story about the power of family, the possibilities of friendship, the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of March 2016: The Nest is a debut novel about a dysfunctional New York family. That’s a pretty common subject for a novel and not very interesting in itself. But there’s magic that happens when you pick up a book, start reading and realize that what the author has chosen to write about—the places, the characters, the dialogue, the set pieces—they’re all just right. That’s how I felt reading this book. The Nest is not populated with characters who are entirely lovable, but I felt each was uniquely human and identifiable, and I especially wanted to know where life would take the four 40-something Plumb family siblings (particularly that rapscallion Leo). Some will take issue with the Plumbs and their upper middle class problems. Some will detest Leo and his family and find harsher descriptions than “rapscallion.” But for my money, The Nest is a great read. This book will be among my favorites of 2016, as I suspect it will be for many readers. --Chris Schluep

From School Library Journal
The four Plumb siblings are waiting for their inheritance (affectionately called the nest) to be dispersed once the youngest sister turns 40. The nest has been growing exponentially since their father's untimely death when they were all adolescents, and each one of the Plumbs has been making poor financial decisions in the hopes of being bailed out by the nest. Instead, the oldest brother is allowed to withdraw the majority of the money early to be used as a payoff for an unfortunate accident he causes. The story develops as the remaining siblings begin to navigate life and the consequences of their decisions without a safety net, but the plot is much more complex than a look at four dysfunctional and often selfish siblings. Teens will initially be pulled into the story by the shocking events in the prologue, but they will connect with the siblings as they recognize aspects of themselves in each of them. The epilogue goes beyond a typical happy ending, illustrating how the siblings have changed and learned more about themselves. YA readers will enjoy immersing themselves in the trendy side of life in New York, as well as coming to understand how adult life may not be all it seems on a well-crafted surface. VERDICT A strong choice for demonstrating how adulthood is as much of a discovering process as adolescence. Purchase where coming-of-age tales are needed.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

A lot of regret - mine, for selecting this
By Carol T.
The minute I read the first sentence of this book from the Prologue, I regretted selecting it.

Let me share the first sentence (yes, this is ONE sentence):

"As the rest of the guests wandered the deck of the beach club under an early-evening midsummer sky, taking pinched, appraising sips of their cocktails to gauge if the bartenders were using the top-shelf stuff and balancing tiny crab cakes on paper napkins while saying appropriate things about how they'd really lucked out with the weather because the humidity would be back tomorrow, or murmuring inappropriate things about the bride's snug satin dress, wondering if the spilling cleavage was due to poor tailoring or poor taste (a look as their own daughters might say) or an unexpected weight gain, winking and making tired jokes about exchanging toasters for diapers, Leo Plumb left his cousin's wedding with one of the waitresses."

First let me say that very rarely do I NOT finish a book but this book merited not finishing. While the story is somewhat predictable and cliché (just read the first sentence), it would not have been so bad if the writing had been better. All tell, no show, which I find maddening. And overwritten to the point where I wanted to claw my eyes out every time I turned a page. I can't believe all of the high ratings for this book, and surely, I can expect to receive a lot of down-voting from folks who are voting on my opposing opinion rather than the quality of my review, but this book was so awful, I'll take the heat.

In a nutshell, the book follows the events that occur after Leo "left his cousin's wedding with one of the waitresses" (see above) and in an inebriated state and receiving a service from the waitress, crashes his car, leaving the poor waitress footless. Thanks to this accident, their father's estate, poised for distribution when the youngest Plumb sibling turns 40 is redirected in order to deal with Leo's indiscretions, legal bills and to make the now footless waitress disappear from their lives.

Now that the four Plumb siblings have lost their inheritance or nest egg (aka "The Nest"), all of their shady goings on have nowhere to hide.

Leo, the oldest is a disgusting pig, a user of people, sucking them dry for his own personal needs. Next in line is Jack, a gay antique shop owner (really?) with a country house. I guess I'm just a little tired of seeing gay people portrayed in the same cliché businesses over and over and over so that annoyed me. Newsflash: Gay people work in all professions, not just antiquing. Oh and he has a lot of financial issues too.

Next cliché sibling is Bea, a wanna-be writer who can't get over lost love, because all creative people hold torches for their lost loves (Dante? Beatrice? Really?). Now she's too sad to move on.

Melody, the last of the Plump siblings was the most realistic of the four, trying to raise twin daughters and manage her expensive dream house in Connecticut. At least this portrayal is representative of the many people living outside of their means. But...

I closed the book forever on the first page of chapter 22, when I read the first few sentences:

"When Matilda was recovering in the hospital and found out how much money she was getting from the Plumb family, she had all kinds of fantasies about what to do with it. (Shamefully, she remembered that her first involuntary thought was a pair of suede boots she'd coveted, the ones that went over the knee and stopped midthigh, then she remembered.) She thought about the trips and clothes and cars and flat screen televisions. She thought about buying her sister her own beauty salon, which she'd always wanted. She thought about buying her mother a divorce."

I just didn't buy it.

That was it for me. Hours of my life I can no longer retrieve.

By the way, I selected this because Amy Poehler states (on the cover, no less): "Intoxicating... I couldn't stop reading or caring about the juicy and dysfunctional Plumb family." I think she meant to say. "I wanted to get intoxicated so that I could stop reading about the jerky and dysfunctional Plumb family."

The characters are some of the biggest jerks on the planet and the ending is awful. I so regret the money I spent on this book.
