She also demonstrates that technology and know-how, far from being centered only in Europe, flowed in different directions: in the eighteenth century, French entrepreneurs were trying to imitate the techniques of bleaching and dyeing of cloth that they found in Egypt and other Ottoman localities.

Hours and Hours of Fun!

As an ESL teacher, this activity book contains lots of great supplemental material for my false beginner and intermediate level classes. I especially like the way the author is able to recycle a lot of the fixed phrases and phrasal verbs that are so common in everyday speech. The puzzles are actually structured in a way that allows students not only to review vocabulary, but also help them become better language learners. Virginia Wise Berninger , PhD, is professor of learning sciences and human development at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. She brings an interdisciplinary background to writing the interdisciplinary frameworks, which includes being a general education teacher (5 years in urban and suburban schools), special education teacher (3 years in a rural school), reading specialist (1 year in an urban school), clinical psychologist on interdisciplinary teams (predoctoral and postdoctoral training at Boston Children's Hospital and as a licensed psychologist in Washington), school consultant (33 years in Boston and Seattle), research psychologist (Harvard Medical School, Tufts-New England Medical Center, University of Washington), trainer of school psychologists (1989-2006), and trainer of educators in K-12 and academics (2007-present). Her research experience includes serving as a principal investigator on research funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development on normal and disabled reading, writing, and oral language development (1989-2008), as well as working at a multidisciplinary learning disabilities center, conducting research on genetics, brain systems, assessment, and instruction (1995-2006, 2001-present).

A useful departure from normal ways of thinking about democracy

The central metaphor of The Eyes of the People is intuitively very easy to grasp. Green explains that nearly all of our thinking about democratic life depends on the assumption that leaders should be guided by the voice of the people, one way or another. We need not abandon that vocal model entirely, he suggests, but we will understand a great many features of mass democracy if we cultivate an ocular model instead, where leaders are disciplined by the People's gaze. Even when most theorists would see them as entirely passive and disconnected from the democratic process, then, members of the public are playing a role in shaping the conditions in which their political leaders operate. That role of "spectatorship" is important and can exert stronger effects the more we cultivate political institutions that promote the value of candor.

Drawing inspiration from Aristotle, Shakespeare's Coriolanus, Weber, Schmitt, and Schumpeter, and eventually bringing his discussion around to the Clinton impeachment (he tentatively defends its worthiness) and the features of presidential debates, the book is consistently thought-provoking and offers lots of fascinating nuggets. That does not mean it is easy reading; although it is far from the most jargon-laden book, it is easy to tell that this is an academic work by a political philosopher. I'm not actually sure how much Green has convinced me that the ocular model can displace the vocal model--for one, he's rather elusive about exactly how "the People's gaze" can effectively discipline leaders. But the book is easy for me to recommend to anyone who has spent some time thinking about democracy and wants a genuinely fresh perspective.
