Unique role-playing game about dark and personal themes in a fascinating complex world, but with an over-complicated system

When Vampire: the Masquerade came out many years ago, it defined a whole new genre. It gave the players an opportunity to role-play as vampires, powerful and immortal creatures of the night, dwelling in modern cities.

At the time of its release, Vampire: the Masquerade was a refreshing change from games of medieval fantasy, like D&D. Even now it remains unique for its focus on characters, morality, personal horror, intrigue, secret societies, and occult mysteries in a modern setting.

Vampire: the Masquerade is a part of a larger setting - the "classic" World of Darkness, which also includes games about other supernaturals like Werewolf: the Apocalypse, Mage:the Ascension, Changeling: the Dreaming, Wraith: the Oblivion, and others.

This is the Revised Edition, also unofficially known as the 3rd Edition, and it is the most well-known and widely used version.

I bought it because I like many things about it:
- I like the difference between vampire clans, both in flavor, and in how they play.
- I like the detailed world with secret societies, laws, factions, internal and external conflicts.
- I like its post-modernistic feel and the "gothic punk" style.
- I like that both the setting and the rules system provide opportunities to explore darker and edgier themes like misuse of power, oppression by you "parent" and by your "government", morality, crime and punishment, intrigue and betrayal, and what would happen to you if you let loose the monster inside you, and do whatever you want to whomever you want.
- I like that it's flexible: you can play it as a slow-paced detective mystery, as a intrigue-filled thriller, as a creeping horror, or you can just play it as a high-octane action adventure with Hollywood-style combat.

What I DON'T like is that the rules system is overburdened with detail. In comparison to modern narrative systems like Apocalypse World (which is more rules-lite), Vampire: the Masquerade is over-complicated. It has too many rules, too many nuances, and the structure of the text sometimes makes it hard to find an answer to a particular question. In a game it is an important downside.
This is why I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5.

Overall, Vampire: the Masquerade is a unique role-playing game, offering an opportunity to touch upon dark and personal themes, and set in a fascinating complex world. Despite it's over-complicated rules system, I very much recommend it.

long awaited, but glad it's here

Well, I'm glad my book finally arrived, but living in Belgium, I did expect quite a long waiting time, so I won't make a fuss over that, it's gotten here, so all is good. The book is great, the game is too, the only downpart from the trip is that the corners are (very) slightly damaged, probably from falling, so my only advice could be to buy it in a store, if there is a store available in your surroundings. other then that, it's a must have if you like to roleplay. You can do whatever you want, as long as your gamemaster has the inspiration and will to make an interesting storyline/quest/etc. You can use real maps, or even googlemaps to have a city to play in, but still, it's the gamemaster that makes or breaks the game, and following the players ability to live their character playing. Play with friends, not through computer, at a table, have some snacks, some drinks (but don't get drunk), and most of all, have fun with this game.

By now almost all tourist agencies in Berlin have inserted in their city tours a stop to the F�hrerbunker.
And what do the poor tourists see? Nothing! An ample zone of parking lots, quarters and game fields in which the bunker should be located. These delegations of tourists cross gateways of residential buildings, trample on miserable flower-beds, climb over low fences following guides that tell them historical events of the places but that cannot answer to the expectations of the groups: but where is it? How is it done?
After a series of tortuous and misleading searches, after investigations on the spot, surveys, comparisons and consultations of original sources, I have located, with the approximation of some decimetre, the spot where the bunker rests.
I could dig it out by myself, I would need (besides the authorization) a pick and a shovel. After all, the bunker is only covered with the sandy ground on which all Berlin lies.
To discover the bunker is very easy. It has been more difficult, in these last 59 years, to try to hide it.

The charm of the bunker is that here happened few but dramatic events with human implications intermingled to frightening histories of inhuman folly.
Here children played and died, here a marriage was celebrated, here confessions and touching meetings happened, but here, in a paroxysmal, demented growing, were made the preparations for the long trip toward Walhalla, toward Odino, by the persons responsible for tens of millions of people that died in the second world war.
Since I found this place, I have it here under my feet, I will tell the readers that will have the patience to follow me, where this bunker is, how it was done, how it is now and which ghosts of human beings and demons still populate it.

I grew up with my mom’s daily meditation book on an end table in our living room. The spine was broken, pages browned, a tasseled bookmark showed the date as reliably as my iPhone. She still reads it every day.

"The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Daily Living" is the meditation book my son will remember, the one I'll read every day. It's now on my end table with a red ribbon marking the season.

The Daily Stoic isn’t simply a book to make me think, it’s an action guide, a “prescription for handling ourselves and our actions in the world.” The great Stoics remind me never to be satisfied with learning--I must always be doing. In order to lead a successful life, I must practice cutting through distractions and desires to get to things that matter.

That’s the only way to become a better human being. That’s the call to action I’m getting from this book--you will, too.

In "The Daily Stoic," Stephen Hanselman and Ryan Holiday have curated works by the great Stoic philosophers--Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, weaving in modern thinkers and situations I can use immediately. In "The Daily Stoic", Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman have complied for you some timeless gems of the great Stoic thinkers, added some modern translation and apportioned them as a daily meditations.

You'll find this is particularly fitting; as developing an elevated mode of thinking is a practice, not a product.

There's an obvious temptation to plunge ahead, but the greater reward is in savoring the lesson rather than devouring the text.

As Heraclitus would point out:

"No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man."

Accordingly, the book gives you a chance to renew your thinking daily with some of the greatest thinkers of all time.

Ryan Holiday is a best-selling author (“Trust Me I’m Lying,” “Ego is the Enemy,” “The Obstacle is the Way”) and a blogger. He brands himself as someone focused on life, dealing with idiots, how to be self-critical and self-aware, humility, philosophy, reading and strategy.

I became aware of Holliday when I read and reviewed his thoughtful and helpful book “The Obstacle is the Way.” It is a book about stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy and its principles, which has sold more than 100,000 copies and has been translated into 17 languages. Stoicism is an ancient Hellenistic philosophic school founded in Athens that promoted the daily management of self. It teaches 1) that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge, and 2) that the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature. These principles are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.

Some will be familiar to readers, others will not:

o Seize life and take advantage of it.
o If you seek tranquility, do less.
o It can ruin your life only if it ruined your character. Otherwise, it cannot harm you – inside or out.
o Do what we can, endure and bear what we must.

In “Daily Stoic,” Holiday provides 366 daily meditations on wisdom, perseverance, and the art of living. He provides a year of quotations and life lessons drawn from the three great Stoic sages -Seneca the Younger, Epictetus (a freed slave) and Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The meditations are organized under three primary topics (similar to those in “The Obstacle is…”) “The Discipline of Perception,” “The Discipline of Action,” and the “Discipline of Will.” Each topic is further divided into monthly themes: “Clarity,” “Passions and Emotions,” “Awareness,” “Unbiased Thought,” “Right Action,” “Problem Solving,” “Duty”“Pragmatism,” “Fortitude and Resilience,” “Virtue and Kindness,” “Acceptance,” and “Meditations on Mortality.”

Paul Tillich noted that Stoicism is “the only real alternative to Christianity in the Western world.” It came to many of the same conclusions about how to think and live. Both are characterized by:

 An emphasis on hardship.
 A sense of man’s depravity and a constant self-examination
 An inner freedom from the world.
 An aversion to excess.

The goal of Stoicism is to attain inner peace. The meditations of the “Daily Stoic” can be a help in overcoming adversity, practicing self-control, being conscious of our impulses, realizing how short life is and making the most of it. The principles within Stoicism are, perhaps, the most relevant and practical sets of rules for those who choose to embrace the obstacles of life. They are the tools that are immediately practical to our current endeavors.
