The book I have been waiting for.

This is the book I have been looking for over many years. There are many books explaining ways to keep your brain 'fit' well into old age, but if you explore their research and other support, they most often fail to meet a high standard of independent research or depth of analysis.

Soft-Wired is an excellent book supported by decades of rigorous scientific testing and testimonials of people who have greatly benefited from the brain exercises available in the PositScience website. I have been using the PositScience exercises for 3 months and notice marked improvements in listening ability, short term memory, sharper reactions etc. This book accompanies the exercises perfectly in that you get to fully understand how they 'soft-wire your brain to develop your full potential. The book is very well written and easy for a non-scientific mind to follow.

If you have ever witnessed the effects of declining brain function in those close to you, Dr Merzenich's book will be an inspiration to explore this exciting new science and enjoy the later years with a youthful brain.

Groundbreaking Research

I am totally fascinated by all things related to the brain, so i was excited to hear that Dr. Michael Merzenich, a pioneering researcher whose work I admire had a new book out. And I'm so glad I found it. This book is not always an easy, breezy read, as it gets pretty down and dirty with scientific terms and at-times, complicated explanations of how the brain works. But that is whats cool about it. The book helped me understand more about one of the most complex organisms on earth. If you're a brain junkie like me, you'll love learning the ins and outs of how our brains are developed and grow throughout our lifespans, making us who we are.
Most importantly - Merzenich prescribes concrete, actionable advice for how we can all change our brains, and our lives, at any age. Truly groundbreaking research from a compelling writer. I recommend it!

Brain Plasticity and a great guide on how to use it to your advantage!

Dr. Michael Merzenich has written an easy to read and very valuable resource on the latest information on brain plasticity (the idea that we are not hard-wired but soft-wired - it even includes a few pages on how he came to "see the light" in this area) and how we can use it to improve our lives at any age. It is important to understand that neuroplasticity can work to our advantage or disadvantage and he gives examples of each throughout this book.

Here are just a few of the valuable topics covered in this book:
* 10 Fundamentals of Brain Plasticity. These are core principles including: "change is mostly limited to those situations in which the brain is in the mood for it", "learning-driven changes in connections increase cell-to-cell cooperation, which is crucial for increasing reliability", "initial changes are just temporary", and "brain plasticity is a two-way street; it is just as easy to generate negative changes as it is to produce positive ones"
* His top ten list of changes that that have been demonstrated by the research to date
* His 8 brain fitness rules including "try to work on a demanding level" and "find exercises that are inherently satisfying and rewarding"
* As a runner, I really benefited from his 6 rules in planning one's exercise routines (and the need to vary the challenges we give our bodies as well as our minds)
* His chapter on "Taking a Holistic approach to improving your life". This includes my favorite "Continuously enrich your life on small and larger scales."

Throughout the book he uses examples to illustrate the concepts in memorable ways. He discusses the impact of aging and the brain and how to limit and counteract the challenges that come with age. It is clear that Merzenich has a true passion for brain science and wants us all to use the information from brain science to enrich our lives and improve our well-being. I hope that you benefit as much as I did from reading this book and putting the ideas into practice!

Note: I also recommend reading the book by Norman Doidge "The Brain that Changes Itself" for some fascinating stories and examples of plastic changes that are truly remarkable

Anjum had been a writer for as long as she can remember...over twenty years..
She claims this is what got her through most of the bumpy rides. She hadn't shared her work until November 2014 on her Instagram account: Findinglostsouls.
A little hesitantly, this pseudonym was picked by her to keep all of the focus on her words and nothing else.. No gender, no nationality, no place, no identity..
If only she knew she'd find her own self along the way.
Souled Out is her first published collection of words from many others yet to come.
Anjum is not a believer in plans.. but she believes everyone is partially made up of pixie dust- she says we all need a little of that to survive the falls.
A daydreamer by night and a forensic scientist by day..

Not what I expected, but still good

I liked the book. It was a quick read and several of her poems were very relatable. However, most of them seemed too simple to me, maybe that's just a preference thing. There were only a few that really struck a chord and "wow"-ed me. I like her instagram account much better.

MUST HAVE FOR POETRY LOVERS!!!!!!!

This book is a must have for ANY true poetry lover!! In my opinion, every person who reads this book can identify with at least 10 poems and feel like it was specifically written for them. Anjum is truly a fabulous writer and you can tell from just reading her book, a beautiful soul!!! I will be looking forward to another book by her!!!

Maybe it sounds kind of lame, but I don't really know how to review ...

Maybe it sounds kind of lame, but I don't really know how to review this book, or poetry books in general for that matter. I don't think poetry is something that you can review; I think it's something you feel. Some poems will hold meaning for you and some won't, but if you return to a book in a few years, you'll find that you can relate to more of the poems than you did before because life experiences allow you to feel it. That being said, I did not relate to every poem in this book, but I cannot wait to reread it in years to come. The poems are simple yet complex, if that makes sense, and touch on love, pain, and self and I loved reading all of them. I have followed Ms. Choudhary on Instagram for I don't know how long, but she was one of the first poetry accounts I followed and was one writer that inspired me to write my own stuff on my own account @jjp_writes. Upon my reading, poem #10 in particular stuck with me, especially the last few lines (I guess if you want to know what they are, you should buy this book (◕‿◕) ).

A MUST for those taking the ASCP exam

If I had to pick a single resource to study for the ASCP MLS exam, I would pick this. It's easy to understand, well organized and comes with helpful explanations for everything you would need to pass the exam. The charts and tables are superb.

If you couple this with the CLS Review book from Harr, you'll pass the exam on your first attempt.

I would suggest getting the physical cards that you can hold in your hands rather than the electronic format b/c you can make notes on them and divide them up into smaller piles by subject.

I have a review site for this exam (look up wordsology on google) where I have some examples of the Polansky cards for you to take a look at if you are still not sure.

GREAT REVIEW FOR ASCP EXAM!

I just want to say that these cards are AMAZING! I took them to kinkos to hole punch the corners (cost me about $2) and then bought binder clips from staples (about $6) and was able to separate each section so I can pick and choose the sections I want to study. The charts are so great and makes it so easy to learn the different anemias, bacterias, coagulation factors, etc. I am also taking practice tests on labce.com and as I study each section, I see my scores going up drastically.
I'm not one who can sit and study for hours so these are great because I can keep them in my purse and pull them out for 10 minutes while in a waiting room or while eating lunch and learn little bits at a time.
You definitely won't regret this purchase.

These cards were very helpful when it came to reviewing for my boards. Unlike traditional textbooks I could carry these with ease without having a backache at the end of the day from lugging around text books. I found the wording and content knowledge to also be great and the best part was that I passed my boards the first time. So, if you are preparing for your boards save your back the hurt and purchase these instead.

Actually funny!

Economics can be a drag to read through. This book has relevant and ridiculous (hilarious, that is) examples that make you laugh out loud. Some of the examples are difficult to understand, but my professor said that finding a text that clearly describes E.V, C.V versus T.V. is tough. (Chapter 4 material)

Bait and Switch

It is revealed in the introduction that Ms. Felix cannot verify that Marie Laveau actually used this book. She assumes Marie Laveau would have access to this book as a resource based on the book's popularity in France, and subsequently it's colonies, during the 19th century. Ms.Felix's line of logic derails on the fact that most women of color in anti-bellum Louisinana (even the fee ones) did not have formal educations and thus were illiterate. Also, as a voudun, most of her skills would have been aquired from a mentor via oral traditions. I cant see her throwing that hard-won knowledge aside to rely on Medieval alchemy. The content of this book is interesting and can sell on its own to those interested in alchemy without any additional lures.

I've been waiting for this for 200 years!

Finally! A translation of the classic French grimoire The Petit Albert.
I've searched far and wide for an english version and the closest i got was one hidden away in the very rare "Silent Friend" book compilation by L.W. Delaurence, but that is a shorter version than Talia Felix's translation.
The Petit Albert is one of those "practical" grimoires from the early 1800's that comprise of a mixture of household tips, medical advice (for man & beast), magic spells, and a dose of astrology and talismanic magic. In these pages you'll find magic lamp tricks to make snakes appear on your walls, magic powders to make the ladies dance in their underwear, and the infamous gruesome Hand of Glory instructions. In the big picture of the cultural influence of the occult in daily life, the Petit Albert is in par with Albert Magnus "Egyptian Secrets" and The 6th and 7th Books of Moses. The type of grimoires that the local conjurer used to deal with regular people's needs. It's just not that well known in the USA because a good complete english translation has been lacking (until now).
The illustrations could have been better quality but even in the old DeLaurence version the illustrations are not that much better.
If you are a ceremonial magic type you won't find much meat and if you're looking for occult philosophy this is not the book for you. But i guarantee that once you have the ladies dancing in their bloomers your high regard for your 20 volume Golden Dawn concordance will pale in comparison to this small volume.

Overall a very welcome addition to my library.

(maybe Ms. Felix will tackle the Grand Grimoire or Dragon Rouge next...)

I like this. Ms. Felix did us all a favor by puttin' out this edition. It's a grimoire that contains mostly "low" (meaning folksy) magic. But this is a book you really must have, if you're into the occult.

I think this should be in the New Yorker. I have seen refugee camps but I never got to know a camp the way Nicholas Seeley did, and then he demonstrated an uncanny ability to let the reader be there as well. This isn't fiction but it could be because of the development of the characters Mohammed and Am'neh.

I wish millions would read this. And understand how war so affects the people caught up in it.

A Wedding that Will Haunt You.

I just finished reading "A Syrian Wedding," written by my son Nicholas Seeley, and available at Amazon.com as a Kindle Single for $2. I may be biased (okay, I'm biased), but this is quality writing that you don't often find for this price. It's nonfiction, and depicts the anguish--and the few joys--of life in Za'atari, the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan. It is not political, and yet it is because you can't escape the politics that forced this camp into existence.

If you consider yourself a student of the human condition you won't be sorry you bought this book. It's not long--about 35 pages--and it won't take long to readbut it will be with you far longer than you might expect.

You will long remember the marriage of Mohammad and Amneh. I expect you'll read it again.

Comprehensive and Worth Finding

Bill Foley's seminal work proved very helpful for me. One could not ask for a more complete text on building a custom electric. I got into guitars and found that the beauty of the construction was something that I had to learn more about. This book gives instructions on how to assemble your own custom axe from popular manufacturers' assembly-ready guitar parts. And even if you aren't going to make your own, buy this one to learn all about how the different parts work, from standard pickups to humbuckers, from tremolo and tonal controls to passive, noiseless pickups. The advice he gives also helped me choose specific components for my guitar, and then told me how to put it all together. Although it is out of print, try to order it through Amazon's Out-of-Print service, which has helped me in the past. A must for a guitar lover.

A useful book for beginners

This is an interesting book for complete beginners. The instructions show the reader how to assemble a custom made guitar from popular manufacturers parts. There are no photos, only drawings. The wiring diagrams appear to be quite useful. When used in conjunction with a proper parts catalogue like Stewart-Macdonald's, it would appear that the reader should be able to construct his or her own custom built electric guitar.

Great book for building a guitar from available parts

I got a copy of this book back in the mid 80's just as the Floyd Rose tremolo was gaining acceptance and the build it yourself ethos was coming to the forefront. In the early to mid 80's you were hard pressed to find an off the shelf guitar that fit your specific needs. Your only alternative was to pay large amounts of money for a custom made guitar from Jackson, Torres, Schecter or the like or build it yourself.

With Parts purchased from various sources and this book, I was able to assemble, adjust, and prep the guitar to get the playability and sound I was after. To this date it has served as a great reference in maintenance, adjustment, and guide for modification for me.

The book is well written and easy to understand. It is well laid out and provides the right information to adjust & install bridge assemblies, adjust necks properly, and how to finish and dress frets.

To this day some 30 years later the guitar I built using this guide by Bill Foley, still surpasses the setups and factory prep that my other guitars have.

If you get a chance to get this out of print book to help you with building and/or setting up your guitar, try to get a copy.
